Michael Johnson could lose (5th) Gold medal today -Sydney 4X400

Court to rule on US relay victory

The Court of Arbitration for Sport has begun its deliberations to decide if the US 4x400m relay team should lose their 2000 Olympic gold medals.
The squad included Jerome Young, who has since been banned for life after failing two drugs tests.

The International Association of Athletics Federations ruled Young's positive test meant the six-man squad should all be stripped of their golds.

But the US Olympic Committee wants the IAAF's decision overturned by CAS.

Olympic 200m and 400m legend Michael Johnson stands to lose his fifth and final Olympic gold won in the relay.

1. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy...had the unique ability to actually
make Carl Lewis seem humble by comparison!

2. But, but, but...he was able to manage a tear in his eye when the cameras
were on him!

I always get suspicious when someone comes to a big meet incredibly ripped, demolishes a very tough world record, and then promptly retires. But that's just me.

6. That hardly describes Michael Johnson
His peak was '96, the Atlanta Olympics. That's when he shattered the 200 world record, running something like 19.32. Johnson hardly retired at that point. In fact, this thread is about a gold medal relay victory in 2000. Michael Johnson was trying to hold on at that point, on the verge of age-induced retirement at 33. He didn't even qualify for the Olympic team in the 200.

Actually, by all rights Johnson's Olympic medal haul should be greater. He was a superstar prior to '92 but was sick and weakened before the Barcelona games. I think it was food poisoning. I attended those Games and Johnson wasn't close to his true form. He didn't medal in either the 200 or 400.
