What is it with the DC area/region choking in sports?
Once again we get humiliated. Virginia (ranked #1 nationally in college baseball) got eliminated in the Super Regional. That means no College World Series. The numerous collapses by the Caps are bad enough, the Redskins have been largely miserable since the 1st tenure of Joe Gibbs, the Orioles are by far the worst team in MLB, and the Nationals can't seem to get more than 5 games over .500

The Super Regional is between 2 teams, and is a best of 3 series. Virginia won the first game (fantastic), lost the a close second game (tolerable), and in the deciding game get shut out 11-0...at home!

:banghead:

Sorry about the rant. Right now it's taking all I leave not to use a string of profanity.

13. Brian Doyle Murray used to do a hilarious routine
...about growing up as a sports fan in the Chicago Area. I wish I could find a copy now. I think it was on SNL at one point.

4. What about the Cleveland area.
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 07:55 AM by madinmaryland
No championships since the 50's. I think the DC area (did you know the DC in Washington stands for the Dallas Cowboys?) has had a better record and they have actually won several championships in the last 60+ years.

Edited to add: Welcome to DU!

especially the frustration of the last 2 years in the NBA. The last major championship in the DC area was in 2002, when Maryland won the men's NCAA basketball championship. Before that, we have to go back to the Redskins 3 Super Bowls (a good time indeed). The only other championships coming to mind are the Orioles (1983), and Georgetown Hoyas (1984). Then there's the Bullets/Wizards. Their last championship was in 1978.

Interesting trivia question: who was the last NBA team to win game 7 of the NBA Finals on the road? Washington!
:wow:

P.S. Thank you for the welcome!

10. Maryland's Women's BB team won a National Championship
in 2006 also! Signed, a Maryland Alumnus. As for your post about Johns Hopkins being a LAX power yeah they still are. And I really only know about LaCrosse because it is HUGE at Maryland...

5. The Caps farm team--The Hershey Bears
Just won the Calder Cup for the second year in a row. And the Maryland women's LaCrosse team won the National Championship this year.

We have good teams around here. They just don't get a lot of attention...:)

somewhere; the Caps sure are lacking that.

Don't follow lacrosse; too far out of the mainstream for me. However, I did hear about the Virginia murder tragedy. The (unrelated) Duke men's lacrosse team problems come to mind; they went from a powerhouse to extinct (temporarily at least).

The Baltimore Orioles have been so awful, their farm team actually fired them! Of course, you won't find that kind of info on their website.

Edit: Johns Hopkins was a lacrosse powerhouse for a long time, not sure if they still are or not.
