What an incredible Preakness race...
...Afleet Alex ran. I was born and raised in Louisville and have seen my share of races, but the race that Afleet Alex ran today was awe-inspiring. Alexandra Scott's spirit was surely in that horse today. My heart soared with him, as well. Thank you for taking me away from the worries of the times for a few minutes, Alex!

1. Wasn't that jockey who cut in front of him, whipping away, in some sort
of violation? He could have caused a tremendous accident.

2. No violation determined by stewards
Yes, that was a very scary situation, but I don't believe it was intentional. Scrappy T drifted wide on the turn and into Afleet Alex's path and caused him to stumble.

3. It wasn't intentional. The horse got caught off guard by the lefthand whip
He got a bit spooked and darted off to the right. It could have been a lot worse, but Afleet Alex is an athletic horse.

4. As Jeremy Rose said,
the spirit of that girl lifted them out of the fire.

Incredible race. And the guts and determination in Afleet Alex (and his jockey) were remarkable, one of the greatest things I've seen in sport. It looked like Alex lost almost no momentum through there and kept charging like a freight train.

I don't think there was anything intentional with Scrappy T's jock as far as inhibiting Alex. Ramon D. made a poor choice whacking Scrappy like that so hard with the left hand in the middle of the turn, though.

On to the Belmont and I hope Alex can get the distance. He sure has the heart to do it.

5. It was a remarkable performance.
Most horses would have eased themselves up after an incident like
that. This horse has a lot of guts.

6. Afleet Alex gave a gutsy performance....
and I don't think I've ever seen anything like it. To clip heels and regain his balance and momentum is a miracle. Rose keeping his seat during the stumble was a miracle.

At 3-1 I put some money on Alex and I made a little bit and that's a miracle.

7. The same thing happened to Alysheba
I think it was in the '87 Derby. He clipped heels in the stretch,
went to his nose and got up and continued on to win. He was a great
racehorse.

Alex is made of the same stuff. The great ones have that drive to
win that overcomes all adversity.

8. I was in the service and overseas when Alysheba won....
the Derby so I never saw that incident.

You are right, the great ones overcome racing trouble and make their own luck. I hope Afleet Alex is one of those horses. I've been sitting here tapping my toes and waiting for a truly great horse since Skip Away. I do well at handicapping but, I enjoy racing more when we witness a truly exceptional performance by a racehorse, not just cashing tickets. Yesterday's performance was exceptional. I hope he stays in form and does some more exceptional things. And the back story of Alex's Lemonade Stand is just icing on the cake.

On to the Belmont!

9. I'm hoping he came out of the Preakness OK
and that he didn't hurt anything.

Tim Ritchey has done a great training job with this horse.

The quality isn't great, but you'll get the gist of it. I think the Alex incident was much worse, but kudos to both horses to overcome potential tragedy and win big.
