Call for the ages against Miami Hurricanes remembered
In the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, field judge Terry Porter made the call that changed the course of college football history. He called pass interference on UM cornerback Glenn Sharpe, giving life to Ohio State, which beat the Canes in double OT to win the national championship.

<snip>

"The football bounced to the ground. Fireworks launched into the sky. University of Miami players hugged and high-fived. Ohio State quarterback Craig Krenzel slumped on the grass. Coach Larry Coker, beaming, started to stride across the Fiesta Bowl field to shake hands with Jim Tressel. On the scoreboard, on TV, on fans' faces, it appeared the Hurricanes had won the national championship.

One second passed -- two, three. Then a yellow penalty flag landed in the end zone, like a bird shot out of the air.

State troopers restrained Coker. The fireworks died. Players froze in their tracks. The game was not over.

Field judge Terry Porter made the call that changed the course of college football history.

Porter called pass interference on Miami cornerback Glenn Sharpe, reincarnating Ohio State. The dizzying game went into a second overtime, and the Buckeyes beat the Hurricanes 31-24.

Miami did not win its second consecutive title. By 2004, UM had dropped out of the Top 10 and hasn't challenged for a championship since.

Nearly eight years later, as Miami and Ohio State play Saturday for the first time since the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, many UM fans still blame Porter."

end of story .... pictures don't lie

BTW If Miami wasn't holding the OSU D-line all night the game would have been 2077 to 3.

17. Actually, apparently they do lie!
I did not watch the game at the time, don't care who won. Never saw this play before today. Elsewhere in the thread I watched a video, and your pic, despite what it looks like, is from after the receiver touched the ball.

3. I thought Miami got ripped off..
no question...and I was pretty much neutral for that game, I don't like either school. I just hate it when officiating decides an outcome. So I'm rooting for Miami tomorrow..

13. Sure Condem
there's no way a NC should have been decided on a weak call like that. I never did see the pass interference. And after watching the clip again, it looks to me like the pic that Botany posted was taken after the players had already deflected the ball. No doubt it came from some shady OSU or Big Ten site...

16. That shot gave birth to the Big Ten Network, Upton.
Oh, well. Things could be worse. You could have just watched Marshall fold against WVU. We are....marshall. Hey, Coach Holliday. Get a new career. It's an insult to call you "Doc".

7. I'm still disgusted.
Big 12 refs getting revenge on Miami for kicking their corn fed butts in Nat'l Championship Bowl games all those years.

@#$% them and @#$% Ohio State.

8. You 'Cane fans who think we're somehow to feel sorry for you...
..Sorry, man. You're the most despised program in college football history. And nothing can undo that. You fucking dug your grave. Breathe the dirt.

You'd think it was the Too Many Men On The Ice call between Boston and Montreal in 1979!

12. Show me a sports fan without a gripe and I'll show you a newbie sports fan.
My father is still mad over shit that happened in the 50's. He forgave the Soviet Union before he forgave the Montreal Canadiens. And you don't even want to know what he thinks about the Yankees.

20. No it didn't.
It gave OSU a first down. It didn't give them a touchdown, nor did it win them the championship. Nor did it take it from Miami.

that phony pass interference call came on 4th down. The call isn't made, the game's over and Miami wins the National Championship.

24. We agree that your initial post was indeed a dumbass fucking post.
Because now you acknowledge that it didn't award the game to OSU. Miami had 4 downs to stop them again, and then another defensive stand on the next overtime. And they failed. Waaah waah waaaah.

And Tressel basically shut down The Ohio State University's offense in the second half.
