"The New York Yankees apparently are on the verge of adding five-time Cy Young Award winner Randy Johnson to their revamped rotation.

New York Newsday is reporting that the Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed in principle on a deal that could shake the balance of power in the American League.

According to the report, the Yankees would send righthander Javier Vazquez and prospects Eric Duncan and Dioner Navarro to the Dodgers. Los Angeles would send righthander Brad Penny, reliever Yhency Brazoban and outfielder Shawn Green to the Diamondbacks, who would ship the 41-year-old Johnson off to New York."

This really makes me sick. Why don't the Yankees just buy the whole freakin' MLB?

my boys just got Pedro. And as a Met fan since the Casey days, I am just waiting for his arm to fall off after the first pitch on opening day, or maybe he'll show up at camp looking like Moo Vaughn.

4. Let em have him...
he's 41 years old, I doubt he's got another stellar year in him. The Mets will tear it up with Pedro and the Boss will be one sorry man.

6. Not a good deal for the Yanks.
He's 41. And as my dad would say: "Rode hard, and put away wet."

They gave away too much for him, including Duncan, a very good third base prospect. The D-backs got the best end of this deal.

7. D-backs are still history
We lost Curt Schilling, and too many other good players, and the baby backs didn't come through for us either.

I stopped watching Dbacks, missed most of the season, it was too depressing.. No longer live in Phoenix, and not driving down there to see them ..

10. Not so fast
A baseball source told ESPN that several obstacles stand in the way of a trade involving the Yankees, Diamondbacks and Dodgers, and that the deal rapidly exceeding the complexity of last year's failed Alex Rodriguez-to-Boston trade might never happen at all.

13. I doubt this trade happens.
first of all, it's not a report of a trade, it's a report of a leak.

green has a no-trade clause, and he's happy in southern california.

from what I'm hearing from folks listening to sportstalk radio in LA, these discussions were ongoing before beltre signed with the mariners, and now that beltre has bolted, the Dodgers are in full reverse.

LA's GM is indeed in the market for pitching, but there are options that don't involve gutting what's left of the middle of the Dodger's batting order.

Yankees on the Verge Of Getting R. Johnson
Athletics Send Hudson to Braves

By Jorge Arangure Jr.
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, December 17, 2004; Page D01

BALTIMORE, Dec. 16 -- If pitching is baseball's most cherished commodity, then Thursday's flurry of activity would have made any broker sweat. First Pedro Martinez was introduced for the first time as a member of the New York Mets at a news conference at Shea Stadium. Several hours later ace Tim Hudson was dealt by the Oakland Athletics to the Atlanta Braves for three players.

But neither of the moves compared with the blockbuster trade the New York Yankees are on the verge of completing. After several months of negotiations, according to Newsday, the Yankees late on Thursday night agreed in principle to acquire Arizona Diamondbacks ace Randy Johnson, undoubtedly one of the greatest pitchers of all-time.

<snip>

In order to get Johnson, 41, the Yankees reportedly would send Javier Vazquez and prospects Dioner Navarro and Eric Duncan to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Los Angeles then would send Shawn Green, Brad Penny, Yhency Brazoban and prospect Brandon Weeden to the Diamondbacks. Johnson and Green both have no-trade clauses, but neither is expected to object to the trade.

The Braves' deal for Hudson, who has a career record of 92-39 with an ERA of 3.30 and is just 29, was a perfect countermove to the division rival Mets' signing of Martinez, who took several jabs at the Red Sox at his news conference. "There was no need for Boston to let anybody get in between us," Martinez said. "There was plenty of time to become a computer geek again, like some of those guys that they have there. There was no need to let anybody get near me for such a long time, why wait? I was healthy. They got my results every day. They saw me pitch, they saw me do my thing, they saw me work. They saw my dedication. I think I earned my money in the seven years I was in Boston."

<snip>

LOL (last paragraph)! Do ya think Pedro might be a little. . . um . . BITTER? ;)

Reports: Johnson to Yankees, Green to D'backs, Vazquez to Dodgers
Posted: Thursday December 16, 2004 10:23PM; Updated: Friday December 17, 2004 2:05AM

At age 40, Randy Johnson posted a 2.60 ERA, led the majors in strikeouts and threw a perfect game.

NEW YORK (AP) -- After so many missed tries, the New York Yankees might really have a trade for Randy Johnson.

The Arizona ace was on the verge of joining the Yankees in a three-team megadeal that also includes Shawn Green and Javier Vazquez, sources told The Associated Press on Thursday night.

Green would go from Los Angeles to Arizona, and Vazquez would move from the Yankees to the Dodgers in the trade that would put Johnson in Yankee pinstripes.

"It is going to happen," a source familiar with the negotiations said on the condition of anonymity. Another team source said the principals were in place for the trade to be completed.

14. ix-nay on the ade-tray. I didn't think it would happen.
I honestly think that the dodgers are up to something else, although I certainly hope that the "something" isn't JD Drew.
