My Steelers still need a corner or maybe two and a nice offensive tackle.

1. I like the Heyward pick
although I wasn't totally convinced that cornerback wasn't our first priority. I'll wait the summer to see what happens with the O-line. Losing both Max and Willie Colon really hurt the continuity.

9. Ain't that the truth,
what they continue to see in their mind's eye that has them believe he's an NFL caliber player is beyond me.

2. There were four QBs picked ahead of the Lions' choice, Nick Fairly
The Lions drafted someone who could sack all those QBs! That's how I look at it!

I was in a sports bar in Seattle last night, and boy were they pumped about Jake Locker. Good call for the Titans. I think he will do great in the NFL - he'll be an overachiever, like Tom Brady - and he's already proved his maturity. There are some things that don't show up on the stats board.

6. How can you ever be considered an overachiever
Edited on Fri Apr-29-11 01:32 PM by Upton
when you're the #8 pick? Remember Brady didn't go until the 6th round. I like Locker, but if anything this pick was a reach by the Titans. Very few people had him going this high..

I mean, look what he did against top opposition. In 2 games last year against Nebraska, Jake went 9-36 (yeah that's NINE FOR THIRTY SIX), 1 TD and 2 int. He went 7 for 14 for 64 yards while getting routed by Stanford. In fact, in 4 games last year, he had less than 72 passing yards.

Locker is a good athlete, a good runner...but there are major questions about his passing accuracy and touch..He's going to need some work to become a success in the NFL..

10. I like Gruden and Kiper's little exchange about Locker last nite
Kiper ragging on and on about Locker's stats and this and that.

Gruden basically said something along the lines, yeah his stats are going to suck when your running for life all game long.

Personally, I think Tennessee made a good choice.

17. He was playing on a Tyrone-Willingham recruited team
that should speak for itself (get your point about the number 8 pick; I just meant in relation to the predictions).

Willingham didn't recruit Locker, he was basically a legacy.

22. Fairly could be a great choice for Detroit
The Lions defensive line came together well and Fairly will help. With Suh already there, Fairly shouldn't have as much pressure to perform at a great level as he may otherwise. The Lions could make some noise this season, assuming it happens.

5. Ask me in three years
Local feeling in S.F. is that the 49ers didn't get their pick's worth at #7. But Harbaugh and Baalke like Aldon Smith's "character" (seems I recall another Smith the 49ers drafted not too long ago on "character"). I'll wait for it to unfold; see how everything meshes together under the new regime.

7. Panthers got Newton
I wasn't really happy with the pick but having the first pick this year was bad any way you look at it. Maybe he'll turn out to be the franchise QB the front office envisions. I have my doubts about that though. But when you have the prospect of Jimmy Clausen as your QB I guess anything else starts to look damn good in comparison.

11. My Team Needs A New Owner
I'm a 'Skins fan, and we desperately need a new owner. We're like a Middle East nation with a brutal, ugly dictator who won't leave.

Also, I want the 'Skins to go 0-20 next year so that we can draft Luck with the first pick.

14. Your Owner Doesn't Sue Old Ladies Who Can No Longer Afford Season Tickets
Your owner doesn't sue newspapers because they wrote the truth about him. Your owner doesn't sell left over, stale peanuts from a defunct airline. Your owner does hand out huge contracts to stiffs like Albert Haynesworth, Dana Stubblefield, and Laverneas Coles.

BTW, you need to check out Nutting's wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Nutting

Too funny.

20. While I can't argue with that assessment of Snyder...
I think Allen and Shanahan played this draft beautifully.

If you have one thing to build around on that team coming into this draft, it's Brian Orakpo.

The only problem you had last season with Orakpo is he drew the double-team constantly and thus was not effective for you as a rusher or as a run-stopper. Look at your first two picks. Putting Kerrigan on the other side makes it if-not-impossible to double-team Orakpo, he makes it at-least a bad idea. He's a disruptive high-energy "keeps fighting to the whistle" guy and he demolishes blockers man-up. In the second round, you went out and got a big wide-body road-grater of a run-stopping NT filling a critical need in your 3-4 and finally getting a NT you can anchor around, the NT that Haynesworth never was for you. Again, his ability to clog up the works, tie-down blockers and hurry the QB all work to free up Orakpo. You spent two picks to allow your best returning asset to do his job better. It's probably good for two additional wins next year right there.

In the fourth, you get an under-rated RB in Helu of the type that Shanahan excels with, a straight-line downhill runner with solid hands and blocking ability. (The knock on him being that he's not laterally-quick. Doesn't matter. Shanahan runs his backs in straight lines anyways.)

18. 2nd round
Edited on Fri Apr-29-11 08:19 PM by JonLP24
I don't know why they drafted another running back with that pick.

They already have two talented young running backs in Hightower and Wells. Wells is more physical while Hightower has more speed. Arizona's problem with the running game is they don't hand off.

I wonder if the 2 QB's selected before AZ in the first round were on Arizona's radar.

3rd Needed a TE for quite a while.

19. Ha!
No. The Patriots had one true need coming into this draft; they needed a pass-rusher to put pressure on opposing QBs...so they drafted an 2 OT, 2 RB, a QB, a CB and a TE before they took a flyer on a DE in the 6th round...on a kid who projects as a special teams player.

Sometimes I think Billy B. does this crap to himself as a sort of "challenge game" like "let's see if I can still win the division, without any pass rushers?"

21. Why in the hell did the Packers draft two TE's?
They are fairly deep at that position and Finley will be back as well. More DB's Ted, and maybe another RB as well.

27. TE in name only, perhaps?
49ers drafted a DE, Bruce MIller of Central Florida, they'll try to convert to a fullback. Miller has never played the position.

26. Dolphins got their gunner
I followed the Jimmy Wilson case four years ago when I was posting regularly on true crime sites.

His story was preposterous. How often does self defense end up with the gun missing and never found? Wilson got away with it only because the victim was even less sympathetic and had more of a shady background than he had.

Wilson was a known troublemaker in Missoula, running around with a thug crowd and looking for trouble. Montana message boards carried frequent reports of Wilson carrying a pistol tucked in his pants and flashing it during confrontations. Yet the victims would decide not to press charges due to fear of retaliation.

I'm disgusted the Dolphins drafted him, and that the media has caved in after the acquittal, asking no questions and doing no research. Ryann Mallett was rejected due to character concerns then Miami takes a guy who undeniably left a guy dead on a driveway with a hole in his eye, and then fled across state lines for several days to do summer football conditioning before he ever turned himself in and conceded involvement.
