Team USA Wins Crucial Opener With Russia 12/25/04

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Dan Fritsche scored twice including the game winner and the U.S. never trailed as the National Junior team defeated Russia 5-4 in the opening game of the IIHF World Junior Championship at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

It was a crucial win for the Americans, facing a team considered among the gold-medal favorites in the tournament's opening game.

Team USA got off to a quick start, scoring two times in the first six minutes of an opening period that would see six total goals. North Dakota forward Drew Stafford opened the scoring, delighting a hometown crowd of over 9,000 with a one-timer over the glove of Russian goalie Anton Khudobin. Chris Bourque increased the U.S. lead to two, knocking in his own rebound just 1:20 later.

2. I watched some last night
US was beating Switzerland 4-2 in the 3rd. I don't know if they hung on to win.

The play-by-play guy on ESPN is pretty crummy. He calls it like it's radio, not TV, so he runs his mouth pretty much non-stop. The color guy can't get a work in edgewise.

I think the US plays Belarus next.

3. You're correct
I'd love to see the Belarus game, one of our 'Indiana Ice' is on their team ... Sergei Kukushkin, drafted by Dallas last spring.

4. Team USA won 6-4
I have caught the third periods of both Team USAs games, 5-4 over the Russians and 6-4 over Switzerland. Team USA needs to work on their defense IMO but the games have been fun to watch!
