1. Thanks for posting
When you see them all together you get a good picture of how ridiculous the current system of bowls happens to be. 2/3 of these are real dogs.

How about a list of bowls we would like to see? I will start it.

1. The Tidy Toilet Bowl Cleaner Tidy Bowl.
2. The Standard Plumbing Fixtures Toilet Bowl

2. Yuk-yuk! Do you remember when there really were only 4 bowls...
...Cotton, Sugar, Rose and Orange? Cotton was one of the biggest, if not the biggest...lots of times the National Championship was determined then.

Don't think the Fiesta Bowl really came into prominence until the mid-1980's, and when ND beat WV for the national chmapionship that year.

My, my, how times have changed.

4. The Cotton Bowl suffered...

...from their connection to the Southwest Conference. They fell out of big-4 status when the SWC went downhill and teams preferred to play in the unaffiliated Fiesta Bowl.

11. The Fiesta Bowl forced its way in 1981

The 1981 season actually January 1982. They were the first minor bowl with the audacity to move to January 1 to compete with the four major bowls. It worked so you've got to credit them for the move.

There were always more than four bowls but only the four majors on New Year's Day. Actually, the Sugar Bowl for a few years moved to New Year's Eve then moved back. As a Notre Dame alum you undoubtedly remember the great '73 game between Notre Dame and Alabama for the national title which the Irish won by 1 point. That game was played on December 31. The Sugar Bowl thought they were losing luster to the Orange Bowl on New Year's night so they eventually moved back to compete head on. It used to be the Cotton Bowl during the day after the parades, then the Rose Bowl in late afternoon, followed by the Sugar Bowl and then maybe a half hour after the Sugar Bowl kickoff would come the Orange Bowl. The Rose Bowl running late inevitably delayed the start of the Orange Bowl. I would be sitting in the Orange Bowl and fans would be incredibly restless.

I enjoyed it much more when the four major bowls were played back to back on January 1. The lesser bowls would begin maybe December 17 with the Liberty Bowl, and you had one bowl virtually every night. Now there are so many games on the same day and in competing time slots they run together and virtually blend together.
