Texans GM Considering Trading Top Pick

By CLIFF BRUNT
Associated Press Writer

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush might not land with the Houston Texans after all. Texans general manager Charley Casserly said Sunday that the Texans have been talking to teams about possibly trading the first pick in the 2006 draft.

It has been widely speculated that the Heisman Trophy winning running back out of Southern California would end up with the Texans because they recently gave quarterback David Carr a three-year contract extension.

The Texans, who finished 2-14 last season, have multiple needs that might be filled with one major move.

"There's clearly players at the top of this draft that are marquee players," Casserly said. "Players that are impact players, players that are going to go to the Pro Bowl, players that are going to sell tickets. We're going to get offers for this pick. We've already had discussions with teams. I think there's value in our pick....

1. I'd trade down
Seems like Bush needs to be protected by a bruiser back and tight end. He's not a very big dude, after all. If Houston can't provide that, then upgrade at other positions.

There's no doubt that Bush is amazingly talented, and I hope he has a great NFL career. He needs to be around the right players, though. He's a Brian Westbrook-type back, though he has far more skills than Westy.

As an aside, it's funny how Vince Young's star is falling. I'm from Philly, and it kind of reminds me of Rasheed Wallace, who was basically considered a functional idiot coming out of high school. Now he's widely respected, and rightly so, for his b-ball smarts. I think Young's going to be the real deal -- what Michael Vick wishes he could be -- and someone is going to be very thankful to pick him up in the mid first round.

2. vince young
my problems with vince young are this
1) when is the last time a option quarterback became hugely sucessful in the NFL. even the fast QBs (culpepper, mcnabb) came out of offenses that were more pro style
2) heisman trophy. with the exception of vinnie testaverde and doug flutie i cannot name one heisman trophy winning QB that was even mildly sucessful in the NFL (and despite their longetivity, the success of flutie and vinnie wasnt that huge. solid but far from spectacular)

i much prefer a leinhart or a culter

9. the problem with number one
is that what NFL team RUNS an option offense? You can't expect an option QB to excell at a position coordinated by people who are blinded to only see quarterbacks as elway. To them, a mobile offense means to just run a standard, drop back offense, and then the mobile QB can run if he gets into trouble. The simple fact is, a larger and larger percentage of NCAA teams are switching to option/mobile quarterback offenses. The NFL just can't escape that. Maybe we'll actually start to see a difference in offenses at the pro level from now on.

11. 2 problems with your post

1) Vince wasn't an option quarterback in the style of a Nebraska quarterback, etc., because Texas did not run the option that often. Vince was a running/scrambling quarterback, but he also has the ability to pass the ball, even though scouts might not like his throwing motion. Texas only ran the option minor facet of their offense - the option was not their offense.

2) Young did not win the Heisman, so I don't know what you're getting at there. Leinart, on the other hand, is a Heisman winning quarterback.

Houston won't go for Young, and Houston would not be a good environment for Young. He had a great offensive line at Texas and he will need to go to a team who can protect the QB. Houston is not the team. If Houston is going to trade their #1 pick, they're probably going to try and get several picks, probably on defense and more importantly, maybe on offensive line.

5. well, I think he's better psychologically than Rasheed
at that age, remember, it took Rasheed Wallace the better part of a decade to get his head screwed on straight so that he could focus his talent and energy on the court, not at the world around him.

And the insane story about Vince Young's Wonderlic test is simply ridiculous.

7. Stayed in School
I think he should have stayed in school at least another year. I think he got some bad advice about coming out early just because he and Texas were able to win the Rose Bowl over USC. I think many people argued that he would not be able to run over NFL backs like he did with college backs. Also, some people noted that Ohio State was a least minorly able to contain him by just realizing which way he likes to run and putting a linebacker in that spot.

6. Finally Starting to Think
The Texans are finally starting to use their heads and think. They should trade the pick and try to get an offensive line. I think Reggie Bush is a great player, but he cannot help the Texans.

8. I'll agree with that
Reggie Bush IS very valuable to the Texans -- in that they can trade that spot in the draft for a number of prime players or draft picks. The Texans have way too many needs to pass up the chance to get a bevy of talent in exchange for one RB.

10. Right
I don't care if you have a guy who is Reggie Bush, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, and Jesus rolled into one. If your OT's and center just let defenders blow by, the RB WILL get stopped, 99% of the time. With a quality offensive line, even a moderately talented running back can put up good numbers

13. Man Jesus with Barry Sanders moves!
Could you imagine the rewrite of the "Walking on water" scene in the bible, to conform with Barry's sideline to sideline running style while swiveling out of every tacklers grasp?!?!?

12. the team with the number one pick always says this
just to see what someone will offer them. plus, it might make salary negotiations with the presumptive pickee easier, if he thinks you might pass him by.

of course, with the mess that is about to be the NFL tomorrow, it's all fair game.
