Games Played Streak Ends When Matsui Breaks Wrist
Games played streak ends after Matsui breaks wrist
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Hideki Matsui tried for a sliding catch, landed hard on his left wrist and grimaced.

His consecutive games streak was over at 518, and perhaps his season, too.

Matsui broke his left wrist two batters into the New York Yankees' 5-3 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Thursday night.

Yankees manager Joe Torre estimated Matsui will be sidelined about three months. After looking at Matsui's swollen wrist, New York center fielder Johnny Damon said it's possible Matsui might not play again until next season.

This was one of those sickening dangling limb injuries.

I hope Matsui can come back from this.

2. When I saw the way his wrist bent I was concerned
Once he landed on it and the wrist bent back it looked ominous.

The Sox announcers last night speculated that it could be a season-ending injury for him. I hope not.

3. Its a wait and see but it doesn't look good
Even if he is able to come back this year(and I think they should avoid rushing him at all costs), his swing is all about his wrists. I am hoping he will be his old self by next year.

4. Matsui's surgery was sucessful and his press release
Outfielder Hideki Matsui underwent successful surgery today at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center for the fixation of a fracture of the left wrist. The procedure was performed by Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser and Yankees' Team Physician Dr. Stuart Hershon.

Matsui's statement:

"Due to this injury, I feel very sorry and, at the same time, very disappointed to have let my teammates down. I will do my best to fully recover and return to the field to help my team once again. I would like to thank Joe Torre from the bottom of my heart for having been considerate of my consecutive games played streak these past several years and for placing me in the lineup every day."

5. He apologized for injuring himself.
"Due to this injury, I feel very sorry and, at the same time, very disappointed to have let my teammates down," Matsui said in a statement. "I will do my best to fully recover and return to the field to help my team once again."

Yankees manager Joe Torre spoke with Matsui, who was operated on at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Torre expects Matsui will return to the ballpark in the next few days and remain in the New York area while his wrist heals.

Torre wasn't surprised by the apology.

"It's all about responsibility -- what he thinks his responsibility is to this team, this organization, because the Yankees committed to him and he feels it's a two-way street in that regard," Torre said. "He's done that before here, where he's made an error, he's come up and apologized to me."

I must have fallen through a wormhole to the other side of the universe when I wasn't paying attention. Or something.
