Former Saints fullback Craig "Ironhead" Heyward died Saturday in Atlanta at age 39 after a seven-year battle with a recurring brain tumor, former Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert confirmed Saturday.

Heyward gained 1,813 yards rushing in five seasons in New Orleans.

After leaving the Saints, he played with the Bears in 1993, then the Falcons (1994-96), the St. Louis Rams (1997) and Indianapolis Colts (1998).

Even though Heyward often drew the ire of Saints coach Jim Mora because of his weight, Mora signed him to play for the Colts. It was then that Heyward first was diagnosed with a tumor.
