Dent, Marino, Young among 15 hall finalists
http://www.suntimes.com/output/football/hall11.html

<snip>

"Former Bears defensive end Richard Dent, quarterbacks Dan Marino and Steve Young, and wide receiver Michael Irvin and were among 15 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame announced Tuesday.

Marino, who holds many of the NFL's career passing records, and Young, who led San Francisco to the 1994 NFL title, were among four finalists who made the list in their first year of eligibility.

The others were Irvin, a member of the Dallas teams that won three Super Bowls between 1992 and 1995, and the late Derrick Thomas, who played for Kansas City and died in 2000 of injuries suffered in an auto accident."

"The other nominees were Dent, the MVP for the Chicago Bears in the Super Bowl following the 1985 season; linebacker Harry Carson, who played for the New York Giants in the 1970s and 1980s and was a member of the 1986 NFL champions; defensive end L.C. Greenwood, a member of Pittsburgh's "Steel Curtain" teams of the 1970s; guard Russ Grimm, a member of Washington's famed "Hogs," defensive end Claude Humphrey, who played for Washington and Philadelphia between 1968-81; guard Bob Kuechenberg, who played on Miami's 1972 undefeated champions, wide receiver Art Monk, a member of three Super Bowl winners with Washington; Roger Wehrli, a cornerback for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1969-82; and the late George Young, who built two Super Bowl winners as general manager of the Giants."

1. FWIW....Claude Humphrey played for...
Atlanta and Philadelphia. Not Washington. The writer got that wrong.

3. Young and Marino should be first-ballot shoe-ins.
You can make a case for either of them being the best quarterback ever.

4. Marino, no doubt. But Young?
Make his case for me. He's got 1 NFL Championship - what else?

6. I'm not a big Steve Young fan, but...
his career numbers are impressive as hell.

His career highlights are here: http://www.allstarz.org/steveyoung/career.htm

7. Some Steve stats...
Edited on Thu Jan-13-05 05:20 PM by rinsd
Passing:

Completion %: 64.3%

Yards: 33124

TDs: 232

INTs: 107

Passer Rating: 96.8

Rushing:

Yards: 4239

YPC: 5.9

TDs: 43

Other Stuff:

7 consecutive ProBowls, 4 as a starter

NFL Player of the Year - 1994

Superbowl MVP - 1994

NFL MVP - 1992

He set the single season record for passer rating, is the only player to win the passer rating title 4 years in a row and was over a 100 rating for each of those years(also a record)

Not a bad resume. I won't cry if he doesn't get in first ballot. But eventually he belongs. And I say that as Giants fan.

8. Yeah, sounds pretty good.
First ballot, maybe iffy, but he'll get in.

9. He's the highest rated quarterback ever!
Higher than Montana, Marino, Elway, Unitas, Otto Graham, Stauback, anyone..

10. True, but a case could be made
that's not the QB but the system ("West Coast Offense" - lots of short, high-percentage passes).

11. True enough.
That's true. But I still think he's a phenomenal (Sp?) quarterback. Stats, as you pointed out, can always be subjective. But I do think his stats say something.

I always have hated the 49ers, by the way. I couldn't stand watching Steve Young, because he would single-handedly destroy anyone he's playing.

12. And also
you have to be a good, QUICK-THINKING, accurate QB to even have a chance to run the WCO. So you're right, Young is up there with the best.

Yeah, I hated the Niners too. They & their fans are sure paying for those glory years now, though.

13. Harry Carson
Its a travesty that Harry Carson is not already in the hall of fame. He was in the pro bowl every year for a decade. He was a dominant middle linebacker.
