the story is that a plane owned by Corey Lidle of the NY Yankees was the plane. reportedly his passport was found.

1. Yep.

Cory Lidle died when he accidentally pulled a 9/11 with his private plane. A flight instructor he was with perished as well.

As a Yankee fan, I can't help but flash back to Thurman Munson (I was born in 1981 but I'm a baseball history buff).

both were flying planes they had recently bought. both had flight instructors with them. both were flying aircraft that may have been beyond their skills. both died in a crash.
