Mario Williams 4 1/2 Sacks |
|
Now that Mario Williams has 41/2 sacks at least one Houston sports writers is saying that drafting Williams first over Reggie Bush and Vince Young is beginning to look like a good idea. Sports writer Richard Justice is saying that Williams is now doing better than both Bush and Young. Justice points out that Bush is only getting 1.7 yards per carry (ESPN has it listed as 2.6) and that in Young's last game he had three interceptions. So do Texans fans and DU members in general agree with Justice's opinion?
For my part I think Justice is a little off. In terms of Bush, yes, he was mainly bought in to be a running back and you could argue that he has not been great at that position. However, the saints have used him a little as a wide receiver and he lead the league in receptions. Bush has 46 receptions for 312 yards, which according to ESPN, averages out to 6.8 yards per carry. That has not been done by a rookie in a long time. Also, in favor of Bush he is on a team that is at least a little loaded with talent. He plays along side a pretty good running back and plays with two pretty good wide receivers. It is possible that if Bush had been drafted by a team either a lesser running back or lesser wide receivers he might be having a much better season. On the other hand Williams plays on a defense that is not that great. It is not like he is playing next to a Brian Urlacher. As for Vince Young he has had an okay year. Finally, the Saints are 6-2 while the Texans are 2-6.

The jury is still out on all of them but in terms of immediate impact I would call Bush and Willaims even just slightly ahead of Young.

2. Well if Davis hadn't been on IR all year.... |
|
I think people would be happy with Williams...
Honestly, i'm of the school that if you don't have a good line on both sides of the ball, the special players aren't going to do it for you. Second to the lines are the linebackers in my opinion.
If D.DAvis had been healthy and had run for around 600-700 yards at this point and 4-6 TD's people wouldn't be crying at all about not drafting Bush. However, if they had drafted Bush who knows what he woudl have done if he had been starting as RB...
It's not a sexy move to draft a Center first, or a DE, but those are the players that will make your team good enough for the skill players to take you to the playoffs.

I think that Bush wasn't even the best RB on USC last year. Look at what LenDale White did as a "traditional" RB and I think that is why his game hasn't translated yet to the pros, but it took Warrick Dunn 2-3 years to really get his groove on in the NFL and he was a similar player in college so Bush I think is going to be fine.

5. On a team as bad as Houston was last year, I agree in strengthening |

the trenches. You won't win if you can't block/tackle at the line of scrimmage, or rush the QB.

My Packers have a former Iowa Hawkeye, Aaron Kampmann who came in with little fanfare, allegedly somewhat undersized and slow, and he now leads the NFL in sacks. If Williams is as good as advertised, he'll be all right. Football is a team game, and the Texans are not real good yet. But the old axiom is that defense wins championships, and it's true. In the long run, both Bush and Williams will likely be impact players, but give them time.
