Heels to hire Davis.
Butch Davis has agreed to become the next coach at North Carolina, according to half a dozen sources connected to UNC and several in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

An announcement is expected this week, possibly as soon as today.

Davis, the former coach of the Miami Hurricanes and Cleveland Browns, would succeed John Bunting, who was fired Oct. 22 but will coach out the season. The 1-9 Tar Heels play N.C. State on Saturday and at Duke on Nov. 25.

Steve Kirschner, UNC's associate athletics director for communications, said Sunday, "There is no news to announce on the coaching search today."

1. I heard more coaching speculation yesterday
that Barry Alvarez would come out of retirement and coach somewhere. I don't recall where, maybe Miami.

2. Yes, Alvarez is rumored to Miami
No one in Coral Gables would be thrilled by that, but it's a logical fit. Alvarez was offered the job but turned it down in 2001 when Butch Davis left for the Browns. The Canes aren't in position to be greedy right now. A transitionary coach for a few years makes sense, unless they get bold and snag a young coach at an upstart program. The Miami defensive coordinator Randy Shannon is also a possibility.

Davis should revive the UNC program. I'm sure he'll be able to pull recruits out of South Florida. UNC may be down but the ACC has high visibility level throughout Florida now, with FSU and Miami games on TV every week.
