If you've never heard of Big Wave surfing, let me just say that wipe-outs are often deadly. Some of the best big wave surfers have died surfing waves like this.

Just imagine a wave like this falling on you, they say it's like having a 10 story building fall on you, and the "hold down time" minutes, not seconds.

I think he did, but the way the video cuts off makes it impossible to know for sure.

11. Have you seen Riding Giants?

It's by Stacy Peralta, who made the (outstanding) documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys (about the birth of vertical skateboarding--the feature film adaptation isn't good, but the documentary is great).

Anyway, Riding Giants is about the birth of Big Wave surfing, and while it isn't as good as Dogtown, it's interesting. I don't know if this clip is from that film, but there are lots of similar clips: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0389326/

Didn't one of the surfers get pretty badly hurt in the middle of that film?

12. They had a whole show about that on PBS on something months ago

The guy flying the chopper for the cameramen flew in Vietnam and he said something to the effect of going down between waves that towered over the helicopter being just as scary.In was shot in Hawaii,that's all I know.

That looked fun!
