Spurrier rumored to be leaving South Carolina to coach Miami
This story broke on CSTV a couple of hours ago: http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/stories/111906aak.html

Nov. 19, 2006

"According to sources late Saturday, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier will likely be named the next head coach at Miami. Spurrier, who won a national championship at Florida, is in his second season with the Gamecocks with a 13-10 overall record, including 6-5 in 2006. The coach is in the second year of a seven-year contract."

It's being debated heavily on college football websites. Posters from South Carolina insist it's nonsense, merely the latest Spurrier rumor. They say he recently donated $250,000 to the university, his daughter moved to the area and has enrolled her child in school, and both Spurrier and his brother have said within the past two weeks that Spurrier intends to finish his career at South Carolina. Of course, Spurrier made similar claims before bolting the Redskins after two years of an incredibly lucrative five year deal.

There was a report Saturday morning that Miami was under negotiations with a candidate to replace Larry Coker, but the candidate was not identified. One report tonight says Spurrier would leave South Carolina after the Clemson game. That certainly makes sense in terms of recruiting.

As a Canes fan I don't know what to believe, or even which way I'm rooting. It was bad enough with an ex-Gator at QB for two years, Brock Berlin.

1. As a 'Canes fan I think I'm gonna puke.
I can't stand Spurrier.

This year has been a disappointment and Coker needs to be replaced, but, Spurrier? C'mon, we don't need him.

2. With Spurrier as head coach
the Miami fights and tantrums will be more choreographed and will display a greater degree of discipline.

4. I feel for you

I cannot stand Steve Spurrier. And I will detest him even more if he leaves South Carolina for Miami. He was welcomed with open arms at South Carolina and that program has been good to him. For a team that doesn't have a huge football tradition, the fan base there is incredible. He's got some really good talent going into next season. South Carolina deserves far better than some fair-weather, visor-wearing attention-whore like Spurrier.

I'll admit he's an effective coach - if all that matters is winning. Forget class, sportsmanship and character if you end up with Spurrier as your coach. I'll hate him for it, but I'll also be happy to see him go to Miami just so the SEC is rid of his smarmy ass. And because it means he won't be coming to Alabama whenever the dysfunctional powers that be in Tuscaloosa decide to cut Mike Shula loose and go coach-shopping yet again.

Warrrrrrrrr Eagle!

:hi:

6. I do not think he would be a good fit for the 'Canes...
he is such a whiny little asshole and it's gotta be all about him. Like you say, the man has no class and no sportsmanship. We don't need him right now.

3. OK, if they hire him, I DEFINITELY want to go to the A&M/Miami game in '07.
Of course I still pretty much want to go, seeing what Spurrier can do with that team in person would be icing on the cake.

5. Back and forth
Spurrier denied the report in his press conference today, but CSTV is standing by its story:

Sources say South Carolina coach heading to Hurricanes

"Despite Steve Spurrier's denials today in his weekly teleconference, sources tell CSTV that he is still heading to the University of Miami to replace Larry Coker as head football coach. CSTV first reported the story last night on Gametracker Live and SEC Football Nation.

In his media teleconference this afternoon at 2:00 pm, Spurrier was repeatedly asked about the Miami job, and denied that he was a candidate. However, following multiple questions asking him if he is in interested in the Miami job, the coach never insisted he wasn't interested, but instead, tip-toed around the answer. I asked him to state that he is not interested in Miami and again, the coach failed to state that he is not interested. Spurrier also jokingly said that he hopes to be back at South Carolina next year, but that depends on the school's athletic director and president.

Despite Spurrier's denials, CSTV stands by its initial reporting and has, in fact, confirmed from yet an additional source very close to the situation that Spurrier to Miami is still likely to happen."
