Twins' Morneau Edges Jeter for A.L. M.V.P.
The Yankees’ Derek Jeter put together his finest season of this decade, but it was not enough to win the American League Most Valuable Player award.

Minnesota Twins' Justin Morneau hit .321 with 34 homers and 130 RBIs, helping the Twins win the A.L. Central for the fourth time in five years.

Justin Morneau, the slugging first baseman for the Minnesota Twins, narrowly defeated Jeter for the M.V.P. award in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Morneau collected 15 first-place votes to Jeter’s 12. Johan Santana, the Twins pitcher who won the A.L. Cy Young Award last week, received one first-place vote.

David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox, who led the league in home runs and runs batted in, received no first-place votes but finished third overall in the balloting.

4. I'd have voted for Jeter...
...but Morneau put up a worthy set of numbers. I can't honestly say Jeter was robbed (and I'm a Yankee fan).
