Mike Shula Fired
<snip>

"Alabama fired coach Mike Shula less than a year after the Crimson Tide finished a 10-2 season, according to a newspaper report.

Shula told his assistant coaches late Sunday night that Alabama
athletic director Mal Moore had dismissed him, The Tuscaloosa News
reported on its Web site.

The Crimson Tide went 6-6 this season, finishing the season with
three straight losses.

Shula, a former Alabama quarterback, was winless in four tries
against Auburn, his team's biggest rival. The Tigers beat the
Crimson Tide 22-15 on Nov. 18, leaving Shula to answer questions
about his job security."

1. The guy should have got one more year
10 and 2 and a cotton bowl win was pretty nice... sure this season was disappointing---but a coach should be allowed 2 disappointing seasons..MHO

2. I think the pressure to win, win, win
is a little ridiculous. He apparently has run a clean program but alumni can be dicks sometimes. I am an Arkansas Alum and I called for the head of Nolan Richardson but it had nothing to do with winning and losing. Just imagine the pressure on whomever is picked to replace Shula?

4. I agree 100% - their probation actually doesn't even end until after January sometime.
Those 'Bama folks are impatient. However, my sis in Mobile told me that they supposedly met with Shula and asked him what changes he would make, and he would not consider any shake-ups of the assistants - obviously not a satisfactory answer to the administration and the alums. Sis says Shula did the play-calling - if the play-calling at the Bama-Arkansas game was any indication, that is a big mistake - very predictable - ran the same damn thing over and over, whether it worked or not.

I liked Shula, though, plus he's cute.

5. I agree, seemed at least one year premature
Shula only had a healthy veteran QB for one year, Brodie Croyle last season, and went 10-2. I think they started out 9-0.

There should be a bit of leeway when you lose a senior QB and aren't even fully off probation, as someone else already posted.

Firing the assistants is a crock. Miami found that out this year. It's hardly a panacea. Apparently Shula realized that but the athletic department didn't.

3. I hate it but his numbers were not that great. Not just the Auburn numbers.
I really wanted him to stay and am a bit upset that he was fired outright. But as I said, the numbers have not been what they should be.
The big rumor so far is Steve Spurrier coming to Tuscaloosa.
There are a few others rumored to come but I guess we will see soon enough.

6. No way Spurrier
is taking the job. He already said he had no interest in the Miami gig and given his love of golf he probably likes being in SC. Obviously coaches deny reports like this all the time, but I don't see it happening.

I also heard Saban mentioned who also said he has no interest. I'll be curious to see who is hired . . . and apparently whoever it is had better beat Auburn next season.
