Redskins dismiss Williams, Saunders; promote Blache to lead defense
WASHINGTON -- The Washington Redskins fired assistants Gregg Williams and Al Saunders on Saturday, promoted Greg Blache to lead the team's defense and announced that a head coach would likely not be in place for at least another week.

The Redskins also formally announced the hiring of Jim Zorn, who agreed to a three-year deal Friday to lead the offense.

"The process of selecting a new head coach continues, although no hire is planned until after the Super Bowl so as not to distract from the championship game as well as to keep open all our options," owner Dan Snyder said in a statement, his first public comments on a coaching search that began more than two weeks ago.

1. Like, wow. I thought Jerry Jones was bad.
And as someone who has lived in Chicago and also follows the Bears (my 2nd favorite team :)), trust me when I say that Greg Blache is a joke, or at least he was in Chicago. Have fun with that one. Yikes.

3. Maybe Williams taught Blache a thing or two
On the other hand, as a Bears fan, I remember sitting down Sunday after Sunday to watch Mr. "Sacks aren't important" waste years of his good players' careers by refusing to put together a competent defensive line. If he still plans like that, I can look forward to Dan Snyder not competing with the Bears for pass rushing talent.

4. Danny Boy is putting together a staff for someone to be named after the Super Bowl.
Who in the hell is it?

5. Spagnolo?
I can't think of anyone else on either team's coaching staff that has been mentioned as a prospective head coach.

It is so odd though, to hire the OC and DC without the head coach having a say. Danny Boy keeps tinkering when he really just needs to hire a good GM and step back.

6. He *has* a "gm"
His flunky Vinny Cerrato. I noticed he was the first to have a new contract. People wonder why Matt Millen stays around in Detroit?
I think this is worse. Cerrato might have a few abilities to spot talent but he's obviously a "yes" man

7. The quote marks are very appropriate.
Danny might let him pick the napkins for the training camp cafeteria, but I'd be surprised if his authority extends much beyond that.

8. and that could be very bad
You cannot talk to an assistant until the end of their season. If the skins hire either mcdaniels or spagnolo, having already hired coordinators, it begins to reek of potential tampering.

9. I wouldn't be surprised
Danny Boy has been accused of tampering in the past, with very good evidence. May have gotten fined, I dunno. Can anyone say goodbye draft pick? Snyder has never seemed to care about draft choices very much

10. Part of it is the way the NFL handles it too.
Look at what the Pats "paid" for cheating in games. Would anyone say it's not worth a championship or two, to give up some chump change and a draft pick? It does reek of tampering, what's going on with the Foreskins. As if Danny asked his new coach, whom he can't *officially* hire, who he wants for OC/DC, and is just getting everything in place for him. If the Foreskins are penalized a draft pick, who cares? Danny got the guy he wanted. No real repercussions - if outright cheating only gets you a slap on the wrist, anything goes.
