Heroes of 1972 respect the Pats
Who says they're grumpy old men? Don Shula and some of his Super Bowl players have some pretty nice things to say about the unbeaten Patriots.

<snip>

"They're proud of what they did in those 17 NFL games 35 years ago, and a little protective of it, but they don't begrudge the New England Patriots if they do the same thing in 19 this season.

They aren't grumpy old men. In fact, they see some similarities between themselves and this year's Super Bowl favorite.

But free agency and the salary cap haven't necessarily made the Patriots' journey tougher.

So sayeth several players from the 1972 Dolphins -- yes, including Mercury Morris -- and former Dolphins coach Don Shula during Friday afternoon conference calls with national media.

Morris, one of the most vocal of the 72's over the years, dispensed with the idea that the players on that 17-0 team were ''desperate old men'' clinging to their record.

"There's nothing for us to hold on to," Morris said. "There's nothing that belongs to us. It belongs to the history of the NFL."

2. Heroes? What damn heroes? Who did the Miami Dolphins save in the Super Bowl?
Geez! That David Neal is a low level moron that needs to get his head out of his rear.

I don't think Tom Brady or Brett Favre have been glorified as heroes. And rightly so. They are good athletes and deserve respect.

4. Dick Anderson's comments were the best
He compared the Pats' style to what Bill Arsparger brought to the Dolphins D, saying the Pats never make a mental error and are very, very well coached.

That's what I see also. Smart fundamentally sound team that takes impressive advantage of the pass defense rules of this era. And it makes it somewhat easier to accept the 19-0, although I concede that Ravens game still claws at me.

Dan Reeves was quoted in the Herald Sunday that he, "Never, never, never" expected anyone to finish unbeaten again. And that the correct astonishment. It can easily be hundreds of years before it's even matched again, if then. Sports fans don't seem to be giving it quite the extraordinary treatment it deserves. It's not merely amazing, it's equivalent of Tiger Woods' career in that we'll almost certainly not see it again.
