to watch. The real Joe Louis story has faded from the public's consciousness, and the HBO documentary helped to remind us of who he really was, and what he really did.
His second fight with Max Schmeling was one of the sporting events with huge political-social implications. After Dempsey and Tunney retired, Schmeling was the best of the five champions in the span before Louis. He had defeated Joe earlier. But the Joe Louis who knocked Schmeling out in one round would have posed a danger to any heavyweight champion of any era.
The way Uncle Sam treated Joe after his military service and his contributions to his fellow servicemen is a disgrace. It was painful to watch.

I really enjoy and look forward to Mr. H20 Man's weekly post on upcoming fights and his particular take on the fighters. And that HBO documentary was a very sad tribute to a great American.
