Trash talking in horse racing? I love it.
I'm not sure if old man Jackson realizes it, but the dude criticizes trash talk and then throws down some serious smack at the end. Personally I love how this is all playing out. Hype the hell out of this race and smack away----cause it's good for the dang sport. Jackson thinks it demeans the industry----please---the industry need a huge shot in the arm and a race between the two smack talking camps will be huge.

It's not easy to anger Curlin's personable owner, 78-year-old Jess Jackson, but Rick Dutrow managed to do it. After Big Brown won the Haskell Sunday at Monmouth Park, his trainer ripped the defending Horse of the Year, and Jackson fired back yesterday on a conference call.

"Curlin couldn't win the Derby, we could," said Dutrow, who reverted to his controversial self after six weeks of good behavior. "Curlin couldn't win the Haskell. We could. Curlin got beat by a filly. We haven't. Our horse is undefeated on grass. Curlin isn't. I don't know why people think Curlin is such a good horse. We're way better than Curlin."

After announcing Curlin would start Aug. 30 in the Grade I Woodward at Saratoga, Jackson criticized Dutrow.

"I think it's bad for racing to have trash talk," Jackson said. "To run down another guy's horse, I don't think it's right. It demeans the industry. I'd like to meet Big Brown, preferably on the dirt, which is each one's best surface, but I think they're considering retiring Big Brown before we have a chance to meet him.' '

Asked about perhaps facing Big Brown in a Breeders' Cup prep, Jackson said: "It depends on whether Big Brown wants to evade us or wants to meet us."

Big Brown is owned by IEAH Stables, whose co-president Michael Iavarone said: "I find it interesting that doesn't like trash talk, because what he said sounds like trash talk to me. I'm not upset at all about what Rick said. I don't think it's wrong to say my horse is better than your horse.

1. It is being reported here in Boston that Suffolk Downs could increase the MassCap
purse to $2,000,000 if Curlin and Big Brown would hook up. The MassCap is timed as a decent tuneup for the Breeders Cup series.

I think Jackson and Dutrow know exactly what they are doing.

4. I thought Jackson's statement was a little 'Tongue in Cheek'
and a great jab at the Big Brown camp and great hype for a match-up. Dutrow was just being Dutrow. He said what he was thinking at that moment and he gives no thought to anything in the future or any thought about what is best for the sport. Dutrow is a simple guy. What ever makes Dutrow happy is what Dutrow will say and do.

I'd like to see a big race out in the Boston Area. It's been a long time since that area has hosted a really major race. There are great sports fans out there and a large Irish community and we Irish love our horse racing. I hope they workout some kinda deal so they meet on the dirt and not on the artificial surface at SA in the BC Classic.

5. This reminds me a little
of the "smack" talking that led to the match race between War Admiral and Sea Biscuit...

6. You're right. Seabiscuit was a great older horse...
just like Curlin. War Admiral was a Triple Crown winner just like...never mind.

I hope they don't talk themselves into a match race between these two wonderful horses. I don't want to see any more of those things. I hope it's a race at 1 1/8th on the dirt with a full field and plenty of betting opportunities. For me, that's what makes good horse racing.

8. I remember that hot July day like it was yesterday
horse racing hasn't really recovered from that tragedy. We lost lots of fans that day that we never got back.
