4. A quick synopse, Mojambo. |
|
The Huskie QB runs in from 10 yards out with 2 seconds left. TD. Flicks the ball over his shoulder. Penalty. Excessive celebration. Back the ball up 15 yards for the extra point to send the game into OT. Blocked. Game over. There's a difference between celebration & jubilation. Watch the highlights on ESPN!

15. It's not a judgment call anymore. It doesn't have anything to do with whether it was jubilation or |
|
celebration. At the conclusion of the play you have two options. Leave the ball on the ground or find the nearest official and give it to them. Locker chucked it 20 feet in the air behind him.
They could have (most would say probably should have) ignored it, but Locker did commit the infraction.
I would join anyone in condemning this rule and wanting it removed, but I think the Huskies were rightfully penalized under current rules.
Close game. A leader like Locker's gotta keep his head.
Sucks for them though.

You don't fucking throw the ball after a score either!
Anyway. Whining about officiating is half the fun of following a sports team I guess.
Gotta jet. Going downtown to drink. I'm sure I'll run into plenty of somber Husky fans. That'll be delightful.

Yeah, who would think that college football players would be excited for a last second victory.
I think the NCAA is just trying to keep players from becoming future Ocho-Cincos.

I'm not a fan of the rule but it is pretty explicit:
2. After a score or any other play, the player in possession immediately must return the ball to an official or leave it near the dead-ball spot. This prohibits: (a) Kicking, throwing, spinning or carrying (including off of the field) the ball any distance that requires an official to retrieve it. (b) Spiking the ball to the ground . (c) Throwing the ball high into the air. (d) Any other unsportsmanlike act or actions that delay the game.
PENALTY—Dead-ball foul or live-ball foul treated as dead-ball foul. 15 yards from the succeeding spot. Flagrant offenders, if players or substitutes, shall be disqualified . If a player or an identified squad member in uniform commits two unsportsmanlike fouls in the same game, he shall be disqualified.

It looked like he "flicked" it about twenty feet straight up. I assume that's high enough to call attention.
All I'm saying that it's in the rules. I don't like it but there it is.

Here's what the refs said: "After scoring the touchdown, the player threw the ball into the air and we are required, by rule, to assess a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty," Pac-10 referee Larry Farina said in a statement give to Washington officials. " It is a celebration rule that we are required to call. It was not a judgment call." http://fe14.news.re3.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080906/ap_on_sp_co_ga_su/fbc_t25_byu_washington

that excessive celebration is never called? I see it called all the time. The difference is that most squads can kick a 35 yard "FG" so it's not normally a difference maker.

I'm a Husky grad living in Orlando. I'm also someone who's ancestor - (third great grandfather to be exact) was an early Mormon, and someone who knew Brigham Young. As one who has read his memoirs, I know Brigham Young to be a murderous machiavellian con man. BYU is my least favorite team because of my family history with the man. Today is a day that will live in infamy.

Yeah. His record as a Husky is just wonderful. When I went there we won the national championship. We went 26 years without a losing season until a few years ago. I have a hard time dealing with the fact that we suck. My school didn't make no losers back when I went there.

So, it was the call according to the rules. And I'm a Wyoming fan, so hate BYU more than most.

I thought he was just letting go of the ball over his shoulder (where it would be very near the dead ball spot). So he's jacked up and he's a strong kid and it has a little juice on it. Under no definition did he toss it "high in the air".

But he did throw it pretty high. You can't see how high on TV because the ball left the field of view. But you can see it come down, two and half seconds later. Assuming that it spent as much time going up as coming down, we have:
h = ½at2 = ½(9.8)(1.25)2 = 7.65 m = 25 ft
But it's a stupid rule (or at least a stupid clause in the rule) and the refs should have swallowed their whistles.

|
I'm not even a Washington fan, but it absolutely did NOT look as if he "threw" it. He can throw a ball 80 yards. The ball fluttered out of his hands. If he'd "thrown" it, it would have landed in the stands or gone over the goal posts. This is where the referee has to use his brain. Locker is strong, and he must have been full of adrenaline. I don't think he did anything more than flip it over his shoulder.

you didn't see what the ref saw because the ball quickly leaves the television frame. It comes down two and half seconds later, actually hitting Locker. That is not flipping the ball over his shoulder; that is sending it straight up twenty-five feet.

44. It's a stupid rule in last two most-tension-packed, adrenaline-filled, emotional minutes of games. |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 04:24 PM by tiptoe
It's unnecessary to require -- and almost "inhumane" to expect -- athletes, by abstracted design, to behave in a way incongruent with extreme situations (...not to mention, it's "rah rah" collegiate sports, with rivalries and traditions, not professional sports.) Applying such a rule for 58 of the 60 minutes of games should be MORE THAN ENOUGH DEFERENCE to the TV people or other parties with motives "to control."
The last two minutes of competitive games can be too special -- especially after a touchdown...i.e. during "harmless" dead-ball time -- making it undesirable for such a rule EVER being given dominion (and certainly NOT for affecting outcomes).
Celebrate all you want, Usain Bolt, in any way you want for attaining the fastest known speed of man in history! Your event was over. (Unless, maybe, some official should have stopped the race or penalized you, when you "mockingly" slowed down, raised your arms, and "celebrated" through the 100m tape!) Regarding your post-race decorum critics: ignore or scorn them...including Rogge!
