He cracks me up. He makes the NBA on TNT what it is: FantasticCharles Barkley, Governor of the great state of Alabama? With what he has to say on gay marriage, I wouldn't count on it.
In an interview with CNN's Campbell Brown, Barkley ran the gamut of topics, ranging from his support of Barack Obama and gay marriage, to racism in America.
When asked about his plans to run for governor of Alabama, Barkley said:
"I plan on it in 2014. I can't screw up Alabama. We are number 48 in everything and Arkansas and Mississippi aren't going anywhere." :spray:
Cover your ears Boss! HAI think he would make a fine governor for Alabama. He's definitely passionate and cares about the people of the state, and I believe he has the tenacity to get things done. Where I think his challenge will be is his different views regarding gay marriage and religion from the majority of Alabama voters.
"...my idea of religion is we are supposed to encourage people to love other people. I am a big pro-choice guy. I am a big gay marriage guy and they are so divisive and that is not my idea of religion. My idea of religion is we are supposed to bring people together. We are not supposed to judge other people."
I applaud him for his views and for publicly stating them but I think that one sentence just determined his election outcome. His views will do well in Birmingham and Montgomery but these two bright blue dots floating in a solidly red state aren't enough to get him the top spot, at least right now. But there is hope.
Historically, the governor of Alabama tends to be a Democrat; out of the 52 men to hold the position, only 5 have been Republican. So there is hope...and he does have 6 years to change peoples minds.
