Who Is The Most Pathetic Sports Fan On This Forum - I Humbly Submit That I Am
The teams that I root for include:

The Mets: A team famous for futility, having won the least amount of games ever in a season, and choking in the last two seasons whent they could have easily won the division. Once had a player squirt bleech out of super soaker at a reporter and a player throw firecrackers at fans - oh, also had a player caught masterbating in the bullpen.

The Jets: A team that finds new and creative ways to break its fans hearts every year, they haven't won a Superbowl since Joe Namath sold his soul to satan in 1968. Only team in NFL without its own stadium, and still won't have one when they move into their new building with the Giants next year.

The Islanders: The laughingstock of the NHL. A team that had a franchise goalie (Roberto Luongo) and then got the first pick in the draft and traded Luongo away for nothing in order to draft ANOTHER goalie (Rick Dipietro) who then got signed to a 15-year contract and hasn't played a full season since. Currently the worst team in hockey.

The Nets: Among the worst teams in NBA in terms of attendance, maybe second only to the Devils in terms of NY-area teams that nobody cares about. Were supposed to move to Brooklyn, but due to the economy, might be staying in Jersey. Also sold Dr. J for $14 worth of beads and some food stamps.

I've been watching sports since 1987. That's 22 seasons with ZERO championships. In the 22 seasons prior to me becomming a sports fan, these teams won nine championships.

---

Can you honestly say you're a more pathetic sports fan than me?

1. Well, prior to 2004, I would have made a case...
...lately though, it's nothing but gloat. I feel your pain, but I don't want to go back to where I was feeling it even more!

3. It could be worse, at least you have the Nets instead of the Knicks.
Your teams are having a pretty rough run, though.

4. Please, don't ever start rooting for the Gators.
The only way I can come close, is that I lived in Tampa in the 80's & early nineties.

I went to 3-4 games per year and I NEVER saw them win a game in person.

5. hmm.
I'm not far off from you..
My four favorite franchises:
Washington Redskins: we all know what Danny Boy has done to this franchise.
Washington Nationals: to quote another DU poster--they play some excellent AAA ball!
And being as my family is from Ohio..Cincinnati Bengals+ Cleveland Browns..nuff said...

8. hey, I've seen your team win a superbowl
for once I'd love to see MY team win a superbowl.

Hell, I'll settle for the Jets just GETTING to the superbowl.

Of course, the Mets went to the world series in 2000, which was during a two-year period when I lost interest in sports and started following pro wrestling. Figures.

I feel your pain on the Nationals though.

6. Try rooting for the Minnesota lineup.
Apart from the miracle World Series wins by the Twins (last one approaching 20 years ago), you've got:

The Wild: A poor replacement for a top notch NHL team - the Minnesota North Stars, who of course promptly won the Stanley Cup after being relocated.

The Timberwolves: A replacement for another franchise that was moved and then went on to become the stuff of legends (the former Minneapolis Lakers), they traded away the only star they ever had, for WHAT?!?

The Vikings: The epitome of NFL futility. Is it worse when your team always sucks (see: Bengals) or when your team is fairly consistently in the chase, sometimes with a chance to win that elusive championship, only to fail and break your purple heart every single fucking time?

9. funny thing about the Timberwolves
back in 2003 we (the NJ Nets) offered you Richard Jefferson and Kenyon Martin for Garnett, and you guys turned us down. Think you wouldn't do that trade over again?

11. Unless something miraculous happens in the next year or two...
the KG trade will probably go down as one of the most one-sided in history. Right next to Hershel Walker. See? Another reason why Minnesota teams are so heartbreaking to follow!

10. I'm about done with the Islanders.
They're never going to get better, never going to go anywhere. How many times are they going to break out the Cup team to draw fans? It's pathetic. I'm close to turning to the dark side.

26. Yes, it's personal.
Ed Snider fucked my dad over back in '78 so we weren't allowed to be Flyer fans anymore. He had a hook-up at the Island and we used to get front row seats and visit the locker room and meet the players and all. We sat next to Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson at the 80-81 Finals. Was pretty cool. But it's been horrible supporting a team that has no desire to win and has traded away any good players they've had over the past 15 years. I'm about ready to tell the old man to get over it and go back to the Flyers.

Heartbreak after hearbreak.

Luckily my last 30 years have been spent in the San Francisco Bay Area -- 5 Super Bowl Trophies and One World Series win.

15. How does one end up rooting for the Nets, Jets and
Islanders? All three kinda outsider clubs?

Are you in Long Island and therefore you don't root for the NYC teams of the Knicks and Rangers?

Or maybe you live in New Jersey or Connecticut?

I have to admit I've always been confused about New York sports and how one chooses each team to root for. Having two football teams play in New Jersey only complicates my understanding.

I root for a tragic baseball franchise (Giants -- even though we have the most hall of famers and the most wins of any MLB franchise.)

And I did get to see them win the pennant in person against St. Louis in the bottom of the 9th in 2002, which was deliriously exciting. I can't imagine winning the World Series would have been any more thrilling, except for the name and the recognition. But still, 0-for-3 in the World Series since moving from New York.

I root for a tragic basketball team (Warriors) that has only one NBA championship dating back to the 1970's.

But the 49ers have fortunately evened out what would otherwise have been a terrible sports life for me.

Edited on Tue Jan-13-09 10:14 AM by Winebrat
They've had some exciting teams over the years.

On edit: How could I forget the Raiders won Super Bowls in 1977 and 1981???

18. I don't know a lot of people in the Bay Area who root for
all of the teams in the Bay Area.

In fact, I loathed the A's after the 1989 World Series.

I don't care about the Raiders, unless they play the 49ers and then I want blood.

But you're right, when you throw in the Oakland teams, the Bay Area as a whole has been pretty fortunate to enjoy many good teams and many championships.

Right now, not so much.

22. it's quite simple how I became a fan of those teams
Back in the early 90s there were two major sports channels in New York - MSG and Sports Channel.

MSG had the Rangers, Knicks and Yankees.

Sports Channel had the Islanders, Devils, Nets and Mets.

My home had Sports Channel. Having both was extra in those days.

Plus, I live on Long Island, so being an Islanders fan was easy, plus I became a fan of them right around the 92-93 season when they went to the Conference Finals against Montreal after defeating the Stanley Cup champion Penguins in 7 games in one of the most exciting playoff series I've ever seen. David Volek's goal is still fresh in my mind.

The Mets I became a fan of because the first game I ever went to was a Mets game, in 1987.

The Nets I became a fan of because they had a player named Drazen Petrovic who was the greatest shooter I've ever seen. I instantly became a fan of his and cried the day I found out he died in a car crash in Germany.

The Jets -- I don't really know how I became a fan of theirs. The first football game I remember watching was the 1990 superbowl, the one where Scott Norwood missed wide right. My dad is a Giants fan. I don't know how I became a Jets fan.

But that's the thing about being a real sports fan, you can't just change allegiances. You have to stick with them through the hard times to appreciate the good times. When the Nets made the finals in 2002 and 2003, I really appreciated it, because of the decade I had spent prior watching them lose 50 games a year.

23. Fascinating explanation. Thanks!
You're a true fan to stick with those teams.

It's interesting, however, that you cheer for a different football team than you're dad.

I'm fiercely San Francisco specifically because of my dad, and him taking me to games at Candlestick Park.

I could have very easily have jumped on the bandwagon and rooted for the far more successful Oakland baseball franchise, but that would be unthinkable.

My dad went to CAL, and so I'm fiercely pro-CAL Bears against Standford, even though Stanford is on the San Francisco side of the Bay.

Funny how that all works out.

And here's your guy. :)

17. I like to watch
the Classic Fights on ESPN. Sometimes, my son will ask me, "How many times have you seen this fight? Don't you ever get bored watching the same fight, over and over?" I explain my belief that it is possible the outcome may change: how can a great fighter make the same mistake so many times?

27. I'm not pathetic, just, um, loyal.
Baseball- Cubs. Now and forever. I just hope they win one before I die.

NFL- Packers. Downward spiral may continue for a while as long as Thompson is GM.

College football and basketball- Iowa Hawkeyes. Ok, the football program may be coming back, but the hoops are bad this year. Thanks Alford.

I really don't have an NBA or NHL team, but I suppose the Chicago teams are the closest I may come.

28. Aw, you're a homer. Nothing wrong with that,
I'm a homer, too. I root for:

The Dodgers: Kind of good lately, but only because their division sucks.

The Nothings, or The Anybodys: No NFL.

The Kings: Way more pathetic than The Islanders.

The Lakers: Um, well...yeah, okay...they're almost always good. But I rooted for them when they sucked, too.
