Chiefs Hire Pioli (as GM)
http://views.washingtonpost.com/theleague/nflnewsfeed/2009/01/chiefs-hire-pioli.html
The Kansas City Chiefs have hired Scott Pioli as their general manager, according to a report by the league-owned NFL Network.

Pioli had been the front office chief for the New England Patriots and constructed three Super Bowl-winning teams there with Coach Bill Belichick.

But he didn't have final say over player-related decisions in New England, and he will in Kansas City. Pioli replaces Carl Peterson, who resigned as the Chiefs' president and general manager.

This could be the biggest score of the offseason. It will hinge on whether Pioli's brilliance in evaluating talent translates into running the whole team.

CLEVELAND PLAIN DEALER (01-13-09):

<snip>

"... Pioli had one lengthy interview with Browns owner Randy Lerner, but is believed to have differed with the choice of Eric Mangini as head coach, though nobody has publicly stated that. Lerner interviewed Mangini the day before and was fairly convinced he wanted him as coach before he interviewed Pioli."

Lerner's an idiot -- no wonder the Browns always stink. Conventional wisdom says you hire the GM first, THEN LET HIM find the coach.

What a missed opportunity. Lerner deserves the team he has.
