49ers bring in Raye to lead offense
The 49ers have hired former Jets running backs coach Jimmy Raye to be their offensive coordinator, multiple league sources said Wednesday night. Raye beat out Ravens quarterbacks coach Hue Jackson for the position.

San Francisco coach Mike Singletary initially offered the job to fired Rams coach Scott Linehan, but Linehan turned it down and ultimately accepted the same position with the Lions. Singletary then targeted Jackson and Raye.

Raye, 62, has 32 years of NFL coaching experience. He has been an offensive coordinator seven times, most recently the 2004 and '05 seasons with the Raiders.

The Niners also appointed Mike Johnson to be its quarterback coach. Johnson is a former assistant for the Ravens, Falcons and Chargers.

5. LOL...I thought about that as soon as Shanny got canned.
Never happen with Davis still there.

Of course, how many times did Billy Martin get fired and rehired?

4. This hire concerns me
Raye has been an OC on 6 different teams and, as far as I can tell, has failed to distinguish himself yet.

On the other hand, there must be a reason he keeps getting hired and, with a 32 year NFL career, experience won't be a problem.

With a 49er team that has had 6 different OCs over the last 7 years, I think Singletary and the organization are valuing continuity as much as anything else and, assuming he does the job and doesn't get fired, in that area I think Raye will fit the bill.

6. Me too.
MAYBE if the Niners had an established O-line, a big fullback and an experienced QB I'd feel differently. But this is an offense with serious holes in it and a front office without a history of quality personnel decisions. Raye may regret this decision.
