Slugger (Barry Bonds) admitted to using substances thought to be steroids
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/baseball/mlb/12/03/bonds.steroids.ap/index.html?cnn=yes

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Barry Bonds testified to a grand jury that he used a clear substance and a cream given to him by a trainer who was indicted in a steroid-distribution ring, but said he didn't know they were steroids, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday.

Bonds told the federal grand jury last year that Greg Anderson, his personal trainer, told him that the substances he used in 2003 were the nutritional supplement flaxseed oil and a rubbing balm for arthritis, according to a transcript of his testimony reviewed by the Chronicle.

The substances Bonds described were similar to ones known as "the clear" and "the cream," two steroids from the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, the lab at the center of the steroid scandal.

1. "Honest, your honor, he just handed it to me....

2. Exactly.
It was the plan all along. Plausible deniability - Poppy Bush perfected it.

3. If anybody in the world could be expected to know what steroids look like
it would be Bonds. Grew up around baseball and trainers forever.

4. Same bullshit argument Sheffield made
they're all jerks

the thing that pisses me off the most is the way the NY media is destroying Giambi right now but had little criticism of Sheffield last summer.

If you're on the juice and hitting home runs you get a slap on the wrist. But if you're on the juice and not performing you get run out of town on a rail.

Typical of our new moral values.

:puke:

19. It wasn't illegal in the eyes of baseball for a very long time.
The lords of baseball simply didn't believe steroids were very beneficial to baseball performance and didn't bother with testing.

I suspect that we will never know definitively who took stuff and who didn't. It's not possible to go back five or ten years to test for "performance-enhancing substances."

I tangled with a couple of them yesterday who attacked me for daring to have an opinion that Bonds used steroids. :eyes:

14. Bonds Is The Reason The Giants Haven't Won The Series
He is universally loathed by team mates and he is the reason I became an Oakland A's fan. When he landed in SF I went back to the city of my birth and gave my money and love to the A's.

I hate Barry Bonds. He is a "fundie" BTW.

17. I LOVE THE A's!!
I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the Red Sox, but my husband has completely converted me to being an A's fan (he's an east bay native). We went to several games this past year, and had a great time.

I'm rather emotionally attached to several of the players--I'm heartbroken they let Damien Miller leave, although I think Kendall will do well. If they let Eric Byrnes go, though, I'll never forgive them! ;-)

6. barry is lying
and should be thrown out of baseball along with everyone of these steroid-human growth freaks. take their "records" and give them to those who deserve them. they fucked over many players that were not chosen for the awards these slugs recieved....but it`s baseball nothing will happen to them. another "sport" that has sunk to the level of world of professional wrestling and body building

24. I believe that witnesses can discuss their own testimony, but not jurors .
or prosecutors, altho I'm not sure what the time frame is. I believe you affirm to tell the truth under penalty of perjury, so a lying witness could be prosecuted for that. However, they may all have gotten immunity in order to testify against Balco et al.

10. I agree his MVP awards should be stripped...
from the time he has been suspected of taking steroids. I hope karma keeps him from winning the World Series. He is scum IMO right along with many of the stars emerging from the nineties who obviously took performance enhancing substances (that were not banned from baseball at the time) and never admitted. But I have to admit Bonds has the best swing in the game and w/o steroids I think he would still have soundly beaten Mays HR #. It's a shame, w/o the steroids he would have been considered the best player of all time. But because of his ego and cheating, he will always have a scarred image and rightfully so. I wonder what Rick Reilly will write about Bonds in SI.

Just one look at his physique was a tip-off. (And those physical enhancements were gained in his late 30s.)

18. I wish they would get something on Sammy Sosa as well.
I'm from Chicago and that jerk off needs to be nailed to the wall. He's so juiced up it isn't even funny. I've been a bodybuilder, (natural bodybuilder, which is why I can't compete) and only somebody who never set foot in a gym would believe that you can go from 170 pounds to 225 pounds of muscle while in your mid 20's, because that's what Sammy did. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see he's taken all kinds of shit. This prick thinks he's untouchable on top of it. When asked to address the whole steroid thing he becomes very defensive. That alone should tell us something.

23. Don't forget Mark McGuire either....
he admitted to taking an over the counter substance that broke down to a steroid like substance when metabolized.

All you need to do is look at before and after shots of some of these guys, say within a 5 year interval. It would be a sin for Hank Aaron's record to be surpassed by Bonds.

At least Giambi admitted to using steroids in his testimony, if the leaks are true. Bonds either lied, or the leaks are incomplete. Bond's personality issues could very well be steroid related: if you take enough of them, they can really screw with your head. I know a pro body builder who that happened to.

26. Strip Bonds' records and awards and banish him.
This hurt the integrity of the game as much if not more than Pete Rose's gambling on and against his team. All of these guys should be banned. Reinstate Roger Marris' record.
