13-year-old wins RWGA championship

Anderson, the 13-year-old prodigy from Bailey Bridge Middle School, chiseled her name into Richmond Women's Golf Association lore yesterday by posting a 2-up victory over two-time champion Lindsay Wortham in a city amateur title match that was laced as heavily with tension and pressure as summertime humidity.

"I don't know what to say. I'm kind of overwhelmed right now," Anderson said. "I'm not sure I expected it to happen, and when it did, it all seemed to happen so quickly. It's all so hard to comprehend. All I can say is, it's an honor."

An honor that didn't come easily. Anderson, the youngest champion, by far, in the event's 82-year history, never trailed while winning her first three matches. That changed in a hurry yesterday. She was 2-down after two holes against Wortham and didn't move ahead to stay until winning No.17 with a par.

Anderson, who won a second consecutive RWGA qualifying medal on Monday, eliminated three of the organization's most skilled and respected players en route to her championship. She earned her matchup with Wortham by defeating Boodie McGurn in the quarterfinals and Natalie Easterly in the semifinals. Among them, those individuals own 11 RWGA championships.
