I decided not to go to the teacher appreciation reception tomorrow |
|
My department is having it.
I don't think I can stand to go and see how much $$ they spend on food and some dumb little trinket to put on my desk when they gave us NO budget to buy classroom supplies this year.
I would much rather know my students appreciate me anyway. The people I work for can appreciate me by signing my paychecks. :)

1. Sprint used to do that all of the time and look at what good it did them. |
|
Everyone used to go and eat and get trinkets and then just go back to dragging their feet when it came to doing anything for anyone outside of your own little power-clique.

One year the supt sent a case of apples to every building. Ours were rotten.
Amato sent us little gift bags full of junk from US Toy. Seriously. I got a plastic yoyo and a pencil. LOL

That's a great idea.
I could do that.
Remember when Falwell said the purple teletubby was gay?
Guess how I dressed up that Halloween at school?
Spent much of the day having talks with 6 and 7 year olds about gay bashing. My principal said she admired that there was a method to my madness. LOL

3. Nurses week is this month too. Sigh. We're supposed to get excited about |
|
a t-shirt or a lunch box (complete with facility logo on it) and maybe a free lunch. Just ignore the stress, low pay, inadequate staffing or whatever the latest issue is.
Sometimes it's hard not to be jaded. How about if we have "CEO appreciation week" instead of 50 million dollar bonuses? I'm sure they'd be touched.

7. Not both, don't go crazy there! Usually it's one or the other. Of course you get to |
|
advertise your hospital too. What a privilege. ;-)
It's true, they are more useful than some of the things we used to get. I have yet to get a rotten apple, but I've gotten some pretty lame stuff.
This year, we'll probably get something worth less then 1 dollar, judging from the cutbacks everywhere.

and the state of Florida is CUTTING PAY 2% for state employees (if they approve the budget they are voting on now).
Thanks, Florida...for all you do. Obviously, NEA/AFT are gearing up for a big fight.

They are already one of the lower-paying states. His district doesn't have a union either.
What happened to Obama's promise to "pay teachers what they are worth"???

The PTO gives us a luncheon. Bless those moms!
No trinkets ... but one year we got a plastic mug. :)
Last year, the principal gave us a balsa-wood picture frame from the Dollar Tree. Woooo!

We had the best group of parents about 10 years ago. They did this wonderful lunch for us every year. They also brought food on parent teacher conference days.
I miss those parents.

19. Our parents are the best |
|
They snuck in over the weekend and completely redid our teacher's lounge. It used to be just the table, 6 chairs, a fridge, microwave, and plain cinderblock walls.
We showed up this week and there was a sofa with pillows and a blanket (nap time!!!!! We had a good laugh at that), curtains for nice filtered light, plants all over, a bookcase with some really good books, and bagels, a fruit basket, and all sorts of treats. It was really nice, especially in that some of it is permanent and gives us a nice atmosphere.

...most of the supplies were bought by the teacher and parents
illinois teachers can deduct a certain amount from their income tax if they purchase class room supplies. my friend who is a music teacher bought close to 2000 in supplies one year. the school where she taught was under funded (the "good schools" in the district had better funding) so she bought as many instruments as her 2000 would buy.

It's a federal deduction. We can deduct $250 a year.
BFD. I probably spend at least 4 times that much every year.

18. We had a nice surprise today... |
|
One of the clubs washed the car windows of all the teachers during lunch. It meant a lot more than a bag of hard candy and a couple of pencils. And I had a lot of dead bugs on the windshield!

20. Feeling hypocritical when it's clear you're so vastly underappreciated! |
|
I find myself voting with my feet in these situation, and when folks ask why, I tell them: "I don't feel very appreciated . . . no need to fake it!"
