So did they forget to tell folks last week was teacher appreciation week? |
|
Nothing in the media. Zip.
Only one thread here that I can see. I even did a search

3. It's Nurse's week too. Must be the week to remember the unappreciated. |

I send you my utmost appreciation and respect. Teachers deserve all the praise they can get. It's a tough, poorly paid and stressful job. From another helping profession, I salute you! :patriot:

4. At Our School, We Were Definitely Appreciated |
|
The support staff brought in goodies for lunch and left them in the lounge for us. Another day they came around to each teacher's room and gave us an apple and a "Golden Apple Award" certificate. Also, the superintendent came around and gave us each a clock with the schools symbol and name on it. Friday morning, the support staff gathered with the teachers in the library. We each had a "shot glass" of 7-up and we all toasted each other. Also, we had some healthy snacks for lunch, or short breaks during the day. Also, there was a large poster with pictures of all the teachers, and at the top it said "We appreciate you." It was a wonderful week. I was pleasantly surprised.

5. We had a great week, too! |
|
The PTOs really went all-out. I travel to three buildings, so got to enjoy the free food and little gifts at all three buildings! When I got to my last building today, there was a big pile of hand-made cards from students. (That was the best gift of all. )
It was the best Teacher Appreciation Week I've seen since I've been teaching. It was really fun and put everyone in a great mood, especially for this time of the year! :hi:

7. I was thinking more of the failure of the media to mention it and DU's failure as well |
|
That was the point of my OP.
Glad you had a great week!

Sometimes we feel welcome, and sometimes we don't. I like coming to this forum, but still a few schmucks manage to sneak in.

6. I'm coming to teach at your school! |
|
We got an email with a picture of a kid and a teacher. It said "We Appreciate You". An email.
My co-workers did nice things every day for each other. Treats in the morning, cute little stickers and stuff like that. But the superintendent sent us an email.
Oh well, it was a step up from the rotten apple we got a few years ago.

1) The kids in one of the clubs washed the teachers' car windows. (Awesome!)
2) Our association gave us a nice card and $10 cash. Of course, that's from our dues so it's not really a gift.
That's it. I did appreciate the window washing and the $10 was fine. Nothing from the admins, students, or parents. Not a damn thing.

9. My kids made cards, wrote me notes, and gave me hugs. |
|
Some parents made a point of thanking me.
Outside of that, though, people are too busy cheering the Obama/Duncan freight train of authoritarian "reconstitution" on to notice that we've ever done anything worthy of appreciation.

10. Stop whining. You teachers are always whining. That's why we don't |
|
call any attention to you. We don't think you matter. And stop whining that we don't care about you.
Haven't you heard? Teachers are not important & second-class citizens. They are not fixing our kids, so they don't deserve anything. :sarcasm:
At our school we got a "hand massage" in the library during our planning periods. I skipped it. Too much to do, plus I don't like strangers touching me. Thought this was an interesting "treat" considering the Swine Flu, & all. :eyes:

The hand massage would have creeped me out (and I don't know any teachers who don't need their planning periods - the implication is that we hang out and do nothing productive during that hour, which maybe isn't the best way to show appreciation).
Our parents completely redecorated our teacher's lounge - or perhaps just decorated, since it was a cinderblock jail before that. They put in a sofa, added huge live plants, put in a bookcase with some seriously nice books, put up curtains. And fed us so much each day that we're concerned they are fattening us up for the ovens.

Yes, it certainly seemed like a hollow platitude. :eyes: Suspect a relative of a principal wanted to promote their massage therapy business.:( Nothing else seems to make sense with that.
You probably teach elementary & parents are still involved. At HS level, we only see parents when they want to rip us a new one. LOL!
IN which state do you teach? Perhaps I should move there!

(I bet that's not the answer you were looking for, ha!)
I bet you are right about promoting a business - either the principal, or a parent wanting to promote it.

Detroit High Schools!
I can't imagine our parents doing ANYTHING like that! Good for you! Glad there is still some appreciation for what we do out there, especially from parents.
Couldn't move to MI....tooooooo cold! I have cousins in the UP. I think they are crazy to live in that frozen tundra!

17. I got an incredible appreciation this morning. |
|
I got a delivery from a young girl right before school started. A big envelope covered with real lipstick lip-prints. I gingerly opened it, and it was a mother's day card from a group of my students last year, filled with notes and signatures, telling me that they missed me, thanking me for teaching them what they needed, and assuring me that "we're all reading all the time," lol.
They wanted to share their freshman year success with me.
I was more than touched.
