Oregon Education Association has sold out its teachers.
Oregon to Peg Teacher Ratings to Student Test Scores

http://www.oregonlive.com/education/index.ssf/2010/01/oregon_to_peg_teacher_ratings.html

Courtney Vanderstek, assistant executive director of the Oregon Education Association, said her union was comfortable signing off on Oregon's plan because teachers, principals and school support staff were included on the planning team and felt their views were heard.

Hey, Courtney, I don't remember any of this being mentioned to the rank and file. And I'm sure that was no oversight. Teachers in the trenches would never have "signed off" on such BS and this.

I can't even tell you all how depressing this news is to me.

1. Nobody asked for my views.
I share your depression. Of course, I'll be sharing the fallout, too. :(

3. I let them know how I felt anyway.
Here are some email addresses:

Gail Rasmussen, President
gail.rasmussen@oregoned.org

Hanna Vaandering, Vice President
hanna.vaandering@oregoned.org

Hanna used to be the president of my district's union. I thought she was a good one. I guess I thought wrong.

2. Teachers, principals, and school support staff, allegedly, eh? She doesn't even bother w/ "parents"
...as part of that equation, and Heaven forbid some student voices were part of that planning.

And people wonder why -- when given a chance -- parents want to pull their children away from stultified, bureaucratic "educational systems" whenever they have a viable alternative...

4. They didn't talk to teachers in classrooms, either.
I don't know WHO she thinks agreed to this crap.

5. Your students' scores don't matter?
"That doesn't mean teachers will get raises or be fired based on their students' test scores. Any use of test scores in teacher evaluations would be decided at a school district level after negotiations between the administration and teachers union."

I don't get the problem as long as the final method of using the scores goes through the union.

6. No. My students' education and future matters.
Standardized test scores are largely irrelevant to true learning.
