NEA And AFT Issue Joint Statement Condemning Central Falls Administrators' Actions
I posted a thread in GD. Let's see where this goes. The privatizers and corporatists have been out in full force today.

3. I think it's going
PROVIDENCE—The superintendent of Central Falls, who fired all of the teachers in the city’s long-troubled high school, said Wednesday that she’s willing to negotiate after their union promised to support reforms.

Superintendent Frances Gallo said an offer from the teachers gave her hope that differences could be resolved without mass firings.

The head of the Central Falls Teachers’ Union met Wednesday with members of Rhode Island’s congressional delegation.

Union President Jane Sessums said in a news release that the union has always been open to the majority of changes proposed by the district, but that the conversation was cut off by the superintendent before they could ever discuss specific reform proposals.

The union said it has proposed a reform plan for Central Falls High School that includes specific programs proven to raise student achievement levels.

4. I'd have a hard time resisting the urge to slap this bitch
She walked out of a negotiation session. Then she decided to play hardball. Now she wants to change the rules yet again and play nicey nice.

Those poor kids in Central Falls. This has been devastating to them. Bet their test scores will suck this year!

5. what is the problem here?
Edited on Thu Mar-04-10 01:10 AM by azurnoir
would you have rather the teachers held their ground? this seems a win for the kids you claim to care so much about
BTW if the test scores for that district had been all that great I doubt this ever would have occurred
IMO your statement reads like union first kids second

9. I take it you haven't been following the story
The teachers have always been willing to negotiate. The supt walked out of the negotiations and fired the teachers.

12. I don't trust this supt
I don't understand why it's good news to give her another chance to walk out of negotiations.

13. this is the the most realistic solution to this impasse
hopefully they reach an agreement, new teachers will not solve any problems either

overall though NCLB needs to be kicked to curb IMO

14. It does, but there is no chance with the University of Chicago types
that are still infesting our White House and our Congress. They still cling to the notion public schools are bad because they are public. That's what it all boils down to.

16. I did a short stint in Chicago area schools
Edited on Thu Mar-04-10 02:13 PM by azurnoir
when I was a kid, actually I did 3rd grade (1965) in 3 states MI, IL, and ended in MN the first and last were very on par with each other, same text books ect, but for the time I was in IL I might as well have not been in school at all, it was that far behind the other 2, perhaps that is why?

15. I don't trust ANY of them. They get away with their antics
because apparently the school boards are in their pockets.
