Standing up for my marriage is not a tantrum.
Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 08:15 PM by ronnykmarshall
I am so fucking sick and tired of the shit I'm reading here today.

"Oh just get over it", "You're not going to spoil this for the rest of us", "Deal with it", "PUMA", "Straw man".

Well a big FUCK YOU to all that think that standing up for my rights is petty.

You so called liberals can kiss my gay still legally married (for now unless Rev Warren has his way) ASS!!

When I see the responses around here I'm not shocked as to why Prop 8 passed.

for 25 years and my partner and I just celebrated 27-and we are all best friends; funny how that seems to happen a lot in our community)took advantage of the opportunity to get married and flew out to calif. I am upset that this may have been all for naught.

16. I don't get it. Is my marriage or family injured by
equal rights for the GLBT community? My God. My children and color blind and completely non homophobic. It's not that hard to raise them to be that way. If I did it, anyone can.

The stuff being spewed here today was sickening. I mostly stayed away because I was working a lot and then when I saw some stuff...well, in all honesty, I didn't want a granite chicklet.

You, and the other California gay and lesbian DU'ers who are married have a special reason to be hugely pissed right now, Ronny.

I recommended your post because it deserves to go on the Greatest Page.

stupid choice.

In the meantime: Schuster, Olberman, Maddow and Tweety are all over the stupidity of the choice of fat f*ck fundy and the obvious symbolism.

The good news, we I saw some pretty good pro-gay spokespeople today, including HRC and a yung lady from firedoglake, who rocked. I wish I could recall her name, I was on the run, but she just hammered the Warren selection.

I'm not gay, but god-damnit this is NOT ok for someone who MAKES IT HIS MISSION to TAKE AWAY the rights of GLBT people. If this is the kind of "change" Obama has been promising, he can have it back. How dare somebody tell you that your marriage isn't in danger, when it's just been made unconstitutional and isn't recognized in any but a tiny number of states to begin with. How dare they.

I can't get married in my state. No gay person's marriage is recognized in my state. In fact, you're liable to get beat up for just suggesting such a thing.

How dare they. Stupid asses.

40. I don't know how you are remaining as calm as you are
I can fly off in a rage about prop 8 and Warren. It makes me so shit I could mad all over, as my mom used to say. I am tired of people calling themselves Christian using religion to exclude and as an excuse for bigotry and hate. I am tired of the religious right giving liberal Christians a bad name. I get embarrassed when I read statements dripping with hate when I realize they are talking about the same God I am. God doesn't make junk. I don't mean to offend by bringing up Christianity but at times I don't recognize it anymore nor do I mean to sound so judgmental but I just don't believe that the God I believe in looks fondly on all of this hate, discrimination and exclusion.

I think the response of the gay community here has actually been pretty restrained in the face of some of the rancid crap I've read here today about civil rights. The only good thing that comes of shit like this is the eloquent writing of GLBT DU-ers in response. I can hope that it will open hearts and minds and the creepy sociopaths will be made to look like the small-minded idiots that they are.

I've never been more saddened reading DU then I have been today. Not even during the primaries.

I'm watching you and the rest of my DU friend being bashed, marginalized, bullied and openly mocked, by people who are supposed to be part of our community.

My heart hurts for you, for all of us.

DU should be a safe place, free of the bigotry we see in much of society.

I wish I could make it better.

52. Yes, it's disheartening. I think it takes some of us longer than others to "get" it and
recognize the seriousness of this as a civil rights issue.

Also, it's not for those of us who are "Straight" to decide what the important issues are for the GLBT community. We should be supporting them, period. After all, this is the Constitution we are talking about, not some frivolous issue.

54. I love you, ronnykmarshall...
& I'm one of the ignorant posters you speak of. It happened on election night &, not being an insider, I intruded "into" the GLBT forum (I saw it on the "latest discussion" page) to reply to what I regarded at the time -- election night -- the umpteenth "negative" post. And I replied rudely. I got my backside handed to me, deservedly. I was elated that night at Obama's win & I wanted to see celebration. In my joyful state I didn't fully appreciate how devastating the prop-8 vote was to not only the GLBT community, but to the Constitution as well. We are all equal under the law & when one sector of Americans' civil rights are trampled on, then we all should be moved enough to see that the wrong is righted.

People don't realize the legal ramifications that GLBTs experience, yet are afforded to other unions the law recognizes as "legal". For one example, if I couldn't visit my husband in the hospital's IC unit if he were gravely ill, I'd be outraged. Only immediate family members are allowed this "priviledge".

Perhaps empathy is lacking & people don't fully appreciate how wrong the prop 8 vote was to the GLBT people, as well as to the meaning of our Constitution. The more constructive GLBT threads are the ones that inform people in general of what this vote means to GLBT families & their legal rights.

I imagine you, ronnykmarshall, as not having the same rights afforded to me, because you are a treasure. Your posts are always upbeat & side-splittingly hilarious. You've made me laugh so many times. And I love the fact that you love your mother so much. I remember seeing your wedding pictures & how happy you were. You add so much to DU & I appreciate your wonderfully witty posts.

I apologize to all GLBTers for my election night outburst. It was short-sighted & I realized soon after that I was wrong.

K&R for ronnykmarshall, whom I adore.

"For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind." - From the "holy" book that many of the bigots like to put in our faces. Maybe they should read it sometime.

64. Here's the thing
You should have a right to get married. (actually no one should as far as governemnt is concerned, but that is another issue).

The assholes that supported prop 8 need to be fought. Prop 8 needs to be fought. The extension of prop 8 to nullify existing marriages needs to be fought.

While Warren should not have been invited to the inauguration, there are a few things we need to recognize.

1> The inauguration is meaningless. What matters is what happens behind the Oval office desk.

2> 90 seconds of someone basically saying "God is Great. God is Good, Let us thank him for this Food" at the start of a meaningless event is even more meaningless.

Ultimately, the battle lines need to be drawn where they count. This doesn't legitimize Warren, or his homophobic agenda.

Should Warren be invited to the inauguration? No. But given the resources available, I'd rather fight for the hills that are truly going to make a real policy difference for and in the GLBT community.

Yes, Warren was a stupid choice. There are, however, a lot better ways to fight for social justice than working ourselves up over what is bound to be an innocuous prayer that fills an insignificant fragment of a trivial ceremony.

66. Here's where I disagree with you
In the long run this is a boon for Warren

He can use it to raise funds to expand his carnival of hate.

That by itself is reason to be concerned.

76. I agree with that point to a degree
It also is alienating him from his fellow homophobes to a degree. The nuts are pissed for the polar opposite reasoning.

82. It is, by far, NOT a meaningless event !

The inauguration will be celebrated worldwide for its historical civil rights meaning: the first African-American sworn into office as president of the United States. What about this is so hard to understand?

The fact that someone so actively opposed to GLBT rights is being given the distinguished honor of giving the invocation is a highly symbolic slap in the face. You may try to convince some of us that this is "meaningless", but to those of us who know better it makes our blood boil.

67. Let's have all these "summer soldiers" and "sunshine patriots" out in the open
where they can be show for what they are, I say. Let's hear them say "full rights for me, but not for you".

I'll be marching in Manhattan tomorrow. Marching against a caste system that I cannot abide.

EVER.

68. Standing up for equal protection under the law, civil rights, and separation of church and state
is not a tantrum.

YOUR rights are OUR rights - human rights belong equally, to all of us.

I stand with you.

69. Damn it! It won't let me recommend it!

Ronny, your rights aren't negotiable just as mine aren't. I'm in this fight with you. I still remember your wedding pictures and how happy you and your family were at that time. Don't let anyone take that joy away from you.

Bottom line: I have your back.

71. Amen! I am straight, and I am sickened by this
whole situation! Denying basic civil rights to people is WRONG - whether it's due to their color, gender, or sexual orientation. I am disgusted by this whole thing with Warren, and extremely disappointed with Obama.

Until ALL people have the same basic civil rights, we will never be a truly free society!

75. Standing up for your marriage is NOT a Tantrum
If the wackos had their way, they would void my marriage too. Religeon does not own the word marriage. Marriage existed long before today's religeons. I had a non religeous, secular ceremony in another country. I am married not civil unionized. Standing up for yourself means standing up for others too. Hang in there.

77. Standing up for your rights is EXPECTED.
But Prop 8 is one thing - and Obama did issue a statement against Prop 8 before the election. Did he campaign on the issue? No he didn't. He made a calculation that it was an issue he couldn't take on AND run for President.
But a speaker at the inauguration is not the same as an endorsement of anti-marriage rights legislation. I will not speak for others and will not defend those who tell you (or anyone else) to shut up about your rights. All I wonder when I read the outrage over Warren is why it seems that some (maybe not you) are treating Warren the same as the vote on Prob 8 in its effect on your rights. They aren't the same.

79. You Are NOT Throwing a Temper Tantrum
Taking away civil rights should make everyone angry, an anger that won't stop until the injustice is taken away.

80. I'm sorry I got to this thread late, Ronny
I'd give it the Rec it deserves.

To those who still think having Warren anywhere neeeeeeeeeear the inauguration is a good idea, I'll just say this: History is one helluva good teacher. Every single time we've tried to extend an olive branch toward them to get them to sit with us and talk sense, they've snatched motherfucker right out of our hands and beat us with it.

Fool me once, and all. Fool us all a few million times, well, you get my drift.

They're absolutely incorrigible, irredeemable, unwilling to see or accede to reason. They cling to their mythologies despite a preponderance of science, reason, or even human feeling. I'd go so far as to say that they enjoy, even savor human suffering, so long as the suffering is none of their own. They've had a major say in governance over the last thirty years and WTF has it gotten us?

Just look around. Debt. Hunger. Homelessness. War. Strife. If that's the fruits of the god they worship, then I'll have none of it, thank you. That's the work of a devil-trickster, not a loving entity as they claim. Their works put the lie to every word they utter. To give one of their worst a seat of honor at an event for which the rest of us have worked so hard, one so steeped in the words of "change" and "hope" puts the lie to that.

We in the GLBT community are used to being lied to, sadly. We're good for votes, then Lucy snatches the football away right at kickoff. At least PE Obama had the decency to get it over with before taking office, instead of stringing it out like Clinton did, giving us a death of a thousand cuts.

While I'm not going to turn my back on Obama, he is most decidedly on probation.

81. Love this post! Thank you for sharing.
I kind of lost use for this place in the last few weeks, and the Rick Warren thing iced the cake. No one should be told to stand down over this. Fuck Rick Warren, and fuck the naysayers here and elsewhere!
