Brazilian gays score victory in Rio state
RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Rio de Janeiro state lawmakers have broken the governor's veto on a controversial bill giving same-sex partner benefits to government employees, the latest victory for Brazilian gays seeking the same rights as heterosexual couples.
The state's 70-member assembly voted 37 to 21 to lift Governor Rosinha Matheus' veto after heated debate over the legislation on Tuesday.
"We shouldn't dramatize this topic but treat it as a question of pure and real rights for people who for 20 or 30 years built a common patrimony," said state assembly member Carlos Minc of the leftist Workers Party.
