Spanish Mayors Refuse To Allow Gay Weddings
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/04/042705spain.htm

A growing number of Spain's mayors say they will defy the government and refuse to perform same-sex marriages. Spain's lower house on earlier this month passed legislation to legalize same-sex marriage. (story)

The bill is expected to meet little opposition in the Senate and become law later this year. The legislation also requires public servants who normally perform marriages to officiate at same-sex ceremonies.

But, the mayors, all members of the conservative opposition party, say they will ignore the law.

1. What?! Conservatives flouting the law?
I thought it was only "renegade" mayors like Newsom who flouted laws? I guess conservatives only flout laws when they feel like it, unlike liberals who flout them when the laws violate human rights or are of questionable legality.

3. The good news is. . .
. . . mayors in Spain, France and other unitary systems serve at the pleasure of the national government. Should a mayor refuse to perform his duties, he can and likely will be discharged from his responsibilities as mayor by the government in Madrid.

4. Misleading headline.
It should be "Some Mayors ..."

The implied general rebellion does not exist.
