Does anyone else like turnips and parsnips in beef stew? I find that substituting one of these for every 3rd potato or carrot (respectively) provides just a touch of bite to stew that helps keep the flavor a bit sharper and more interesting.

1. It's the only way I like them |
|
and it's in strong flavored soups and stews. I got used to having them baked with a little tamari, but I can't say I ever really liked them that way. I was just poor and they were just cheap.
Why not head over to the Cooking and Baking Group and ask some advice there?

never tried turnips in the stew tho - will def. have to try that sometime. I second Warpy's suggestion to post this in C+B too- you won't find a nicer, more helpful group of cooks and bakers anywhere on the net!

I just did a sub with turnips instead of potato in a vegetarian, Ethiopian recipe, I found on line. Smells wonderful with all the spices. Good winter comfort food.

Better in lamb or mutton stew. The strong flavors really compliment.
Once I made wild duck stuffed with turnips. I had orgasms the whole time I was eating it.(ok. that was a slight exxageration)

Put mashed turnips in your mashed potatoes about half and half. Add a lot of butter, csome half and half or cream, more butter , then some more butter. Serve with butter.

22. I volunteer at my local food bank once a month |
|
my church does it with the local Lutherans
I told one of the Lutheran ladies my recipe for mashed potatoes, which has only slightly less butter than yours
she was shocked
I told her it wasn't health food by any stretch
I use cream instead of half and half

23. My mom's idea of how to make stew... |
|
... was to dump a bunch of meat, potatoes, carrots, peas, and onions into a big pot, cover everything with a whole bunch of water, and cook it for several hours until it turned a nice shade of grey. Then she'd add her secret ingredient -- turnips -- and cooked this mess for another half hour, or until everything tasted foul and bitter, or in other words, like turnips. It was vile and I refused to eat it, preferring to go hungry. To this day, I will not eat stew, with or without turnips. I had to learn to cook out of self-defence. Thankfully, my dad was a good teacher.
I like parsnips, though, in butter.
