Sioux City City Council passes traditional-marriage resolution
<http://www.siouxcityjournal.com/articles/2009/02/03/news/local/ac361b8894383296862575520013df0d.txt>

I am so disgusted by the council of my hometown ... and they wonder why the kids move away - feel free to leave comments on the story.

Voting 3-2, the council Monday adopted a resolution supporting the legal definition of marriage as between one man and one woman, opposing efforts to redefine the institution as anything else and urging the Legislature to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot.

The vote came after a public hearing that lasted two hours and 20 minutes and saw more than 85 people pack the Council Chambers at City Hall.

Hoffman first proposed the resolution in December, but Ferris, Hobart and Rixner succeeded in deferring the matter while an attorney general's opinion was sought on the council's authority to take such action. Last week, Ferris said he didn't want to wait for an opinion that might not even be forthcoming.

Explaining his rationale Monday, Ferris, a Roman Catholic, said: "I have an obligation to my faith. ... My faith is more important than being politically correct. When I die, I have to answer to someone who is more important to me than an editorial writer or a blogger. ... We know we are being aggressively lobbied to change the definition of marriage."

1. Largely symbolic as the State issues marriage license - symbolic of bigotry.

2. Varnum v. Brien
As a short background, this is a response to the Iowa Supreme Court case currently pending in which Polk County (Des Moines) legalized same-gender marriage. The opinion of the court is expected in the next several months.

7. Framing is everything if people understand it
In this context for the story I felt same-gender marriage was a more apt definition. Thanks for noticing, and yes, I do use the term marriage equality when it fits the situation.

maybe it's just evolution & they're swimming in prehensile shit - these snarks who hold themselves superior because they're heterosexual are no better than the white racists of the pre-civil rights South as far as I'm concerned.

What fools.

5. May I point out that this is Steve King territory?
King is the Iowa congressman who is politically to the right of Hitler and Limbaugh.
King voted against Ledbetter last week in his most recent incarnation. King is probably most famous for proposing the "Great wall of the USA" between us and Mexico. This wall included razor wires, turrets, moats and all the other 16th century accoutrements.
Maybe the biggest surprise is that 2 council members voted against it.

6. Usually the dysfunctional-hate-syndrome runs deep, scratch the surface
and it seems many extremist anti-gay bigots also harbor the same fears of other groups that threaten their hegemony.

11. Um, did we have Sioux City marked for take over?
I mean, I'm all for the impending invasion - it's a surprisingly scenic area. Or is this a pre-emptive strike? Are my heathen Illinois gays massing just over the border with pitchforks and lycra at the ready?

I'll go along. I'm just a little hurt I wasn't invited. Is there a gay NORAD-like organization that plans these things and do they have a newsletter?
