Adam Lambert - is he to gay for American Idol fans?
Edited on Wed Mar-18-09 02:31 AM by FreeState
Anyone else watching American Idol this season? I love a lot of the contestants - including Adam Lambert, in fact Im rooting for him. However I have noticed online, be it twitter or just blogs in general are full of people posting how much they cant stand him. I cant find anything similar for any of the other top 13 contestants.

I've also noted that it seems teenage girls love him as do some people of an older age that remember many of the artist he resembles.

Is it his personal style?
Is it his singing style?
His pictures online that show him kissing men in full drag?

Is this indicative of marriage equality with the younger generations being more accepting of people who identify as GLBT? If it is what do you think we a society could do to help make life more comfortable for your every day citizen who may be more on the outside of the norm, be it in dress, mannerism or interests?

Edit: if you are not watching here is a link to his version of Ring of Fire that I think is brilliant - however if your a JC fan you may have a different opinion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7Rcealqmng

1. I don't watch the show and I don't think he's "too gay".

Nothing about him makes him seem "too gay."
Personal style seems flamboyant but it looks similar to any Korean Heartthrob. All the Korean actors I watch dress and look the same in shows so this is really no big deal. This may be a problem for the US but anywhere around the world it's fine. To be completely honest it looks like a metro-sexual going out to a rock club to hang out; so nothing unique at all in him even in the US in particular found in guys in NYC or California or any City of the US with some sense of style.

His singing style?! What was gay about it?! I mean I don't know, he seemed like he was playing up to the camera and that's about it.

Do you know how many guys I know who have kissed men in full drag, who are not gay?! Well I know a lot of flamboyant guys...I think it's because a lot of them are actors. If women can do it and not be associated with being gay then men can't. And even if he was gay, I don't see how this would mean he's "too gay". I'm having problems with this "too gay" thing.

There's only one thing we can do to make everyone feel comfortable. Accept, understand, respect, and move on. As a Black woman in New York I can tell you at least 3 times a week I deal with something racist. On this board included a bit more. People are too focused on the "other" and identifying people by categories or groups as you've just done in your post. This is not accusatory but it's the fact that everything you questioned might be associated with being "too gay" when there is no monopoly on who or "what" is gay or too gay. As there is no monopoly on who or what is Black.

Personally I was with Simon on this one, his rendition was utter rubbish. Keeping in mind I love all songs "Middle Eastern" and Johnny Cash. I just think his voice wasn't anything desirable in that song, not that it couldn't be in others, and I found his playing up to the camera way way way too contrived.

7. Is not passing for straight, too gay?

"People are too focused on the "other" and identifying people by categories or groups as you've just done in your post. "

This is GLBT forum.
Being gay is not "other" here.

Typical "Korean Heart throb"? I dont think so.

"Metro Sexual"? Hardly!

Does being too flamboyant to pass for a flamboyant straight, make him TOO gay?

Looks to me like our Idol contestant may not have been gay enough!

2. He's my favorite. His performance today was "gay"...but he'll still make it through!
I don't think people care anymore as long as he's good, and he's by far the best this season...

3. He's my choice to win. He's bold.

He is the one who I look forward to seeing each week. I loved his rendition of Ring of Fire. It will be going on my iPod.

Adam Lambert's talent is far beyond anyone else on AI. It's not really even a contest. Paula actually made sense last week when she said it was hard to believe that he doesn't already have a record deal.

4. I'm straight and I think he's a winner.
His take on 'Ring of Fire' was brilliant - the best performance of the season so far.

It was creative, truly original, and he sang it sooooo well. My husband and I thought he was incredible, also for having the courage to take a Johnny Cash classic, turn it inside out, and make it work.

I was stunned by Cowell's reaction, but then, he made more than a few bad calls last night.

The judges this year have been the low point of the show. Giving mixed signals to the singers (just before Adam, they chastised a singer for not making a song her own and then when Adam does it, they trash him too).

Adam may be too gay for American Idol, but here's hoping that people vote for talent above all.

6. I'm a singer, so I didn't WANT to like him, but I absolutely LOVE HIM
I love that he doesn't seem like an asshole, he is true to himself and he sings the way he wants to sing.

I also thought his version of "Ring Of Fire" was brilliant and the soaring high notes were amazing.

I'm ONLY voting for him, and I rarely ever vote for anyone on that show.

There are times, like last night when Simon called Paula's response "stupid" that I almost turned it off to never watch again, but my habit is way too strong for that.

Adam Lambert isn't "too gay" for anything, he's just GREAT ENOUGH for everything.

At the beginning of the song, I was skeptical.
At the end, I BELIEVED!
Stunning.
