Gay couples begin seeking Iowa marriage licenses

Associated Press
Published: April 27, 2009

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Same-sex couples have begun applying for marriage licenses in Iowa after a state Supreme Court ruling legalizing gay unions took effect.
The court issued an order early Monday saying the appeals process in the case has officially concluded. The first couples filed marriage applications less than an hour later.
Same-sex weddings could take place Monday if couples can secure waivers from judges that let them bypass Iowa’s three-day waiting period.
At least one pro-gay marriage group is counting on that and has announced its members will hand out bouquets to newly married couples in five of Iowa’s larger cities.
The Iowa Supreme Court’s unanimous April 3 decision made Iowa the third state to allow same-sex marriage.

Scott County Recorder Rita Vargas explains the process of getting a waiver of the three day waiting period to Tearese Bomar, 22, and Shamera Page, 27, both of Davenport as they ride the elevator at the Scott County Administrative Center in Davenport Monday morning before walking next door to the Scott County Courthouse. Their request was denied by James E. Kelley at the Scott County Courthouse citing there was no emergency need for their marriage.
