I make no apologies and neither should anyone else here when we support our own |
|
It doesn't matter whether we are talking about politicians, american idol singers, charities, volunteer organizations, hair salons, whatever.
We have an obligation to support our community and our kids. So yeah, maybe he is just a singer on America Idol, but there are dozens of gay kids watching him. They should know that an OUT gay person cannot just be voted off because some churches unite against him.
We are an oppressed minority and this is not a fucking culture war. It's our lives and the lives of the next generation of queers and it doesnt matter to me whether its a big thing or a small thing, in all things I will support my community.

But when it comes to American Idol, I will vote for the best singer. And I am not yet convinced that Mr. Lambert is that person.

....that fundies are organized against Adam. Got any links?
I like Adam. I think he's a sweet young man with a lot of talent.
I just am opposed to the idea of turning a simple singing competition into something else.

organizing an effort to keep people from voting for him because he is a "bad role model." I can't remember their name or find a link, but I saw it here on the site last week.

One anonymous message on a message board talks about church people voting against Adam because of his sexual orientation.
There's NOTHING ELSE that displays any discrimination against him.
There are stories about people supporting Gokey and Kris because they want to, for positive reasons. There is NOTHING else (except here on DU) about an effort of religious people voting against Adam for cultural or political reasons.
NOTHING.

24. look to the OP though, the point being |
|
it already IS something else, and we didn't make it that way. At this point everyone left has warts and tiaras.
I WANT to vote for the best person, but if the votes are already skewed by fascist xtian groups gaming the vote, then it was already "something else" from before I voted or even saw it.
Adam has amazing musicality; what I don't like is overbaking his exposition/development on the way to his coda, where the power of his upper octave gets a little pushy and strident and the music gets muddy. The hot sauce should accent the meal, not BE the meal.
Having said that, Danny-boy sounds like every other xtian rocker-crooner I've ever heard doing "best of" album infomercials in the wee hours. He seems like a nice kid, and he has shining moments, but I have NOT heard him say or deny or have an opinion about the supposed christians who are propping his vote, and that's ugly and immoral to me; that's the Danny wart.
If we REALLY believe in letting the best person win then we should only get one single vote the entire season - at the very end.
but first place is not about being the BEST singer - just the most well liked singer. Face it, he's already won and his star is going to far outshine Danny whatsisname's forgettable devotional crooning.

same next week. I don't pay attention to or get angry at what others say here about it because I was always the first one to roll my eyes over any discussion American Idol related. :P
Seriously though, lots of what he sings and his over-emoting are not my style but the kid can belt out a tune like nobody else.

22. Hey, it was a joke, ok? We all know the arts wouldn't exist - at least |
|
as we know them - if not for the high proportion of gays involved in them.
I didn't see, and haven't heard (because I haven't paid any attention to American Idol since, oh, forever) that there was a move to vote him out by fundies - and having seen that referenced in other posts here I think it only fair to organize a pushback. What I saw in your post was just a "let's all get behind him because he's gay" post, which struck me as a little weird.
My comment was loosely based on the old "To Be or Not To Be" script, where the theater manager, finding out the Nazis are arresting Jews and gays, says "without Jews and gays, there IS no theater!"
My apologies about the misunderstanding.

Hey DUers, I have an idea. Let's vilify gay people for responding to inane moralistic lunacy. Let's not condemn the source of the moralistic arrogance, let's chastise queer people for drawing so much attention to themselves (blah, blah, blah...).

25. I vote for him because he's the best |
|
I think he's an amazing singer, one of the best new singers I've heard in or outside of AI. If he gets through to next week, I'm buying a go phone so I can text for him. If I had more money, I'd buy 4 go phones so my whole family can text for him. As a mother of two teenage sons who are a little different (theater kids) and who aren't ashamed of being different, I think Adam is a wonderful role model. He's worked hard at his craft and I can't stand the idea the fundies are organizing to take away his dream.
if you do have at&t, you can send multiple texts at the same time, btw. 10 at a time, I think.

26. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think he will win and I don't think it's because he's gay |
|
I have only watched the show once this season, last night. Adam was terrific, and the best singer there. But winning this contest is more than talent, it's appeal. I watched all three guys and feel certain that the last one, the one who sang and played the guitar will win.
Adam is a great singers, and will be a star whether he wins or loses this contest. I predict that Adam will be asked to join or front for an aging but successful band.
The guy in the middle is a schmo, destined for golf rock at best, or back up for Michael Bolton.
The third guy has the girl vote. He's sexless enough for the young ones and sexy enough for the older ones. He's got that "just rolled out of bed" look that some people think is really sexy and he kind of whines when he sings, so he's right in there with a lot of the popular music. He's pretty and harmless- Adam is bold and mischievous.

|
And I don't think it's lost on him that there are lots of gay young people out there who would benefit from seeing a person who never gives up actually seeing the payoff, and not hiding in the closet for ten years before coming out. I don't think Adam had a choice actually, as he was pretty well known apparently before he entered the contest and his pics are all over the web, but he wouldn't have been the first to down play that or pull the "none of anyone's business" routine.
Disclaimer - the names of several male celebrities both in and out of the closet were deliberately not mentioned in this post.

28. Dumb question, but... what do you text, and to what number? |
|
I've not watched a full episode of AI since the second season, but i have been frequenting YouTube, and have heard a lot of Adam's songs. He's outstanding, and i'm looking forward to hearing him get ahold of some original material.
So... as someone who has NEVER cast a vote for an AI contestant, how do i do it? What do i text, and what number do i text it to?

if you have at&t. it's a different number each night. for texting it is only the first number of the night. For example last night he was the 3rd. contestant, so his text number ended in 03. You can also send multiple texts at the same time.
