Conyers says he has votes to repeal Defense of Marriage Act
The Michigan Messenger

DETROIT– Congressman John Conyers, D-Detroit, said Saturday in an interview with Michigan Messenger that the votes are in place in the House Judiciary Committee, which he chairs, to repeal the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Gay rights advocates have been working to get the law repealed as more states pass laws allowing same-sex couples to get married.

“Well in my committee, yes, but in the House and Senate, that’s a different question,” Conyers said in terms of a DOMA repeal passing.

Asked if he supported marriage equality for the gay community, the Congressman replied, “Sure. I always have.”

A repeal of DOMA would open the door to allowing marriages of same-sex partners performed in others states to be recognized throughout the state, as well as the federal government.

1. Well, what's he waiting for
Let's start the voting. Not that it will help in half the states (like my state of MI) where constitutional bans were passed.

4. Oh, definitely.
Just didn't want anyone to get their hopes up based on the headline they used on the article.

5. Yeah
I guess it was somewhat misleading, but I'm glad he is speaking out about it.

6. The Repeal DOMA Will Receive Full Attention Right After.....
They help take care of more serious stuff like....

Like the protection of imaginary species......

But I dare say that the protection of Queers, (and the Polar Bear) might have to wait a bit......

A funny comparison time line:

1973: (A similar creature is protected in Arkansas, where, in 1973, the state Senate passed a resolution declaring portions of the White River a protected refuge for the fabled water monster Whitey.)

But It Does Make One Wonder If A Gay Fabled Water Monster Might Be Able To Legally Adopt On A Wednesday Afternoon In Fall?
