1. We need to use the proposition process to recall these criminals
They violated the US Constitution AND the state Constitution knowingly and willingly. We need a recall proposition on the next ballot. If the ballot process can be used for the purpose of rampant bigotry, it can be used to recall judges.

34. Actually propositions are not used to recall elected officials, including judges
I know its a nit.

There are 2 propositions in the works that will overturn H8. Little doubt about their passage.

3. I begin collecting signatures to repeal this monstrosity - NOW.
Along with that, there's no reason I can't work on recalling them too!

:)

For the foreseeable future, I dedicate myself to repealing H8!

sorry, grapes and almonds and hotels and car rentals. You can rot where you fall in california - I do inspect every item I purchase. good thing most of your prime time series worth seeing are produced in Canada anyway, but I'd give that up too.

Rot.

No Photoshop, no problem.

No Facebook, no problem.

No DU - don't you mean no freeperpubic?

I'm talking about real money from produce and travel. It's not all or nothing, by the way. Just do your part.

But any CA-based website you visit is generating real money for the proprietors.

That includes Google.

Oh, and heirloom tomatoes. You can never find the really ripe ones when you need them.

19. oy. donner party, your table is ready.
vuh.

I guess you cherry (tomato) picked your crops? Also services. Also travel. Please, I guess your heirloom organic avocados are to be made fun of; California C. Half my produce section here in Dallas comes from or through california, and nearly all of the organic section.

You missed the point entirely, but enough with acrimony, kay? I THINK we're on the same side.

The point is, if there is a choice between spending money in California or elsewhere, I recommend exercising that choice as often as possible.

21. And I think it would be better to directly target the assholes responsible
In other words, let's go after the religious bigots. It would probably have more of an effect if you protested outside your local Catholic church than if you stopped buying California grapes.

8. And you hurt ALL Californians by doing that.
You aren't just hurting the ~52% who voted for this abomination, you hurt the ~48% against it.

And in case you are not aware, California is dangerously teetering toward bankruptcy as it is.

11. I'm sorry KW
it will hurt all Californians. That's the point. There isn't any gray area here - I choose what to do with my money, and if paying for produce from one of the states that does allow marriage makes more sense, then that's what needs to happen.

Should we trade with the Taliban? Approximately half the Taliban are women. Not trading with the Taliban hurts the innocent women.

If the gay and gay-friendly community outside of california flexes its economic muscle and if you are seriously concerned that it would have an impact, then it is indeed worth doing.

12. Good. That's the point of a boycott.
I mean hey, it would suck for your average Californian. But maybe hte average Californian could use a little prodding to get his ass in motion to support equal rights in his state.

15. Is there a planned boycott of the other 40-odd states where gay marriage is illegal?
Or just the state where people are fighting for it?

The other states didn't pass then have a mob vote and bully pulpit to remove marriage. This is california we're talking about, not Kentucky.

Just the ones where it was legal until an illegal law was passed that had a simple majority decide the rights of a minority, which was then upheld by the state's supreme court in an overwhelming decision.

Giving something, then taking it away is, in some ways, worse than never having given it in the first place. The gay men and women of South Dakota aren't being taunted with it in the way the people in California are.

If you're going to stop fighting for it because people aren't buying napa wine, then... well, no other way to say it, but fuck you.

28. Fighting for it is one thing. Fighting stupid is another.
A boycott is definitely the "underpants gnomes" approach:

1. Boycott California Produce
2. ???
3. PROFIT

Personally, I'll continue pushing for the removal of tax exemption for any church that supports this bigotry.

29. Perhaps if you're blind
That ??? Is actually quite easy.

Boycott Californian produce in favor of say, Vermont or Iowa...
Californians realize their economy is taking a hit because people would rather shop elsewhere because of this decision
Profit (Californians putting their backs into repealing what it is adding to their economic woes)

Swear to dog, lefties of this day and age don' kno nuttin'.

30. And that has worked before ... when?
There are two major sets of circumstances under which boycotts can be successful: 1) When there's a need to raise awareness of an issue (e.g. the 60s grape boycott for migrant workers) and 2) when the boycotters have economic power comparable to that of the boycottee (e.g. the national anti-apartheid boycotts against South Africa).

Neither one of those criteria apply in this case: 1) everyone already knows about the gay marriage issue and 2) strong, activist supporters of gay marriage are simply not a big enough group to have an impact on the California economy.

From here it looks like:

1. Call for a boycott of California
2. Nobody cares
3. FAIL

A lot of time and effort wasted, when we could have been using it to put the proverbial fear of god into the fundies.

being aware of your surroundings doesn't take much time and effort, unless you're pursuing a career as roadkill.

Boycott the bigots--the ones who financed this sordid mess. Tomorrow we'll be launching the first phase of a comprehensive, searchable database of the scum-suckers who bankrolled Proposition 8. They're the ones you want to boycott, not everyone willy-nilly.
