7 companies have pulled their advertising with KRXQ after anti-trans violence aimed at children
http://glaadblog.org/2009/06/05/update-nissan-wont-renew-krxq-advertising-contract/

On May 28, KRXQ radio hosts Rob Williams and Arnie States spent more than 30 minutes making dehumanizing and defamatory comments against transgender children. You can listen to the original broadcast here since it appears the audio is no longer available on radio show’s website.

Seven companies have confirmed they pulled their advertising contracts with KRXQ or will not renew in the future as a result of offensive comments made by the two shock jocks. Another company has decided to step forward and release a statement on the incident.

At 5:10pm, I received a phone call from Nissan North America. I spoke with the Director of Corporate Communications who wanted to provide GLAAD with the following statement on their advertising with KRXQ.

Nissan North America’s statement reads: Nissan does not support the views expressed during the May 28th broadcast on the Rob, Arnie and Dawn in the Morning show on KRXQ. Our advertising purchase with this show ended June 1 and we will not renew it.

Currently the list of companies no longer advertising on KRXQ includes:

  • Chipotle
  • Snapple
  • Sonic
  • Bank of America
  • Verizon
  • Carl’s Jr (CKE Restaurants)
  • Wells Fargo
  • Nissan North America

1. Good for them
Nice to see advertisers taking a stand against hatred. It's the one and only thing that these radio and TV stations will understand, loss of money.

9. I'm wondering if ad boycotts in the current climate can actually be more effective than before...

I think maybe quite a few companies that have smarter people running them realize that in the current climate where we have more and more people out of work, and more and more people pissed off at corporate America and the increasingly more obvious role that they have in screwing over America, they are probably going to be more sensitive than they used to be when someone finds something like this happening. They don't want to be tainted any more than they already are and lower their business prospects that much more when business is already poor now as it is.

We should be doing more of this sort of thing to make sure that companies know where we aren't going to put up with actions another company is taking with their ad dollars that taints their image.

I don't think one would have had this quick a response even just a few years ago that one is having now with this campaign.

And hopefully it will also help us get some of the more distasteful and extreme wingnuts off the air soon too when their employers realize that their bottom line can't put up with their bullshit.

5. Excellent. Thank you for the follow up.
As the parent of a transgender child (now adult), I will be writing to thank each company on that list.

11. That is really powerful.
I've been following this story here and in GD and I'm so glad these creeps are being penalized. This really sends the best message. I hope other radio shows in the Bay Area take notice. There are many offenders who are borderline as bad as these two.

12. Awesome. That show is horrible, maybe it will finally be gone.
Seriously, flipping between that and a few equally horrible morning shows (would it kill anybody to play music before nine?) on my morning commute was why I finally got a new deck with an ipod connector for my car.

It's that offensive all the damned time.
