Anyone catch the Rachel Maddow/Howard Dean interview last night? |
|
Many thanks to Rachel Maddow for championing the rights of GLBT citizens by continuing to shine the spotlight on an issue which, it would appear, the administration would prefer to sweep under the rug. Last night she interviewed Howard Dean on the subject of the DoJ brief. Dr. Dean stated that the DoJ and Obama admin went way over the line in that brief, and whether or not the admin felt compelled to defend DOMA the language was incredibly insulting. Dr. Dean also said the administration has broken faith with the GLBT community and should accelerate its purported schedule with regard to GLBT civil rights issues, perhaps addressing DADT first, as the reversal of DADT has the support of both the American public and top military brass.
Sorry to simply paraphrase some snippets from a very interesting interview but if anyone has a link to a transcript or video, could you post it here?
Again, thanks to Rachel Maddow and Dr. Dean!

2. Will The Fool Who Wrote The Brief Get Fired? |
|
I saw Dr. Dean, he was very good: the leader of the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party.
Obama fired the fool who staged the scary Air Force One photo op in NY. What will happen to the the person who, in the brief, compared gay marriage to incest and marrying children? It will be telling.

4. That brief was a slap in the face to millions of Americans |
|
And the timing -- during gay pride month, no less! -- made it even more insulting.

Obama's argument that he wants the Congress to repeal DADT struck me as the same type of argument that Stephen Douglas used for his stance on slavery. Douglas wasn't pro-slavery but wanted the individual states to decide for themselves. Lincoln accused Douglas of moral weakness on this point because Lincoln believed that slavery was evil and that he couldn't be counted on, as a Senator, to do the right thing when it came to the slavery question. Obama can't be counted on to do the right thing on civil rights for gays because he is morally weak on the issue.
