A leading black leader in the nation's capital is under fire for a sermon in which he demonized gays and lesbians.

Rev. Willie Wilson, pastor of Union Temple Baptist Church in Southeast Washington DC and national executive director of the Millions More Movement to mark the 10th anniversary of the Million Man March in October, warned his congregation that "Sisters making more money than brothers and it’s creating problems in families … that’s one of the reasons many of our women are becoming lesbians.”

In the July 3 sermon entitled “You’ve Got to Fight to Be Free” he also said, “Lesbianism is about to take over our community. I'm talking about young girls. My son in high school last year tried to go to the prom. He said, 'Dad, I ain't got nobody to take to the prom because all the girls in my class are gay. Ain't but two of 'em straight, and both of them ugly.’”

I don't mean to minimize anyone's pain over these remarks. But MY GOD! This man is IGNORANT!

Women becoming lesbians because they're make more money than men?

First: WHERE are women making more money than men? The only way I can figure that's possible is where women are working and men aren't, or where women have had the moxy/self-esteem to educate themselves and get better jobs.

Second: *blank stare* "becoming" lesbians?! No one "becomes" a lesbian, Rev. You're born with your orientation. It's not chosen.

Third: WHO are these women "becoming" lesbians? Show them to me!!

Fourth: It is because women are earning more that they're forsaking the cheap menfolk and pairing up -- why? To have a higher-income home?

3. I would be willing to bet that the median income of black women

is higher than that of black men. Why that is I won't really go into due to not being completely sure myself, but I would be willing to bet that the answer isn't simply that black women have more self esteem and moxy than black men. Connecting that to lesbianism is idiotic but his basic premise about income, at least in his community, is likely accurate.

On edit, I didn't realize that median income only counts those who work. Thus I was incorrect about offical median income black men in 2003 had a median income of 32,241 while black women had a median income of 26,965.

As I suspect though, there is a significantly higher likelihood that a black man will be unemployed than a black women. Men 10.8% women 9.2%, since by definition they are left off the median income data I think that scews the median income data to make men look better off than they really are.

Thus, I still think, especially in the inner city, black women are on average making more money than black men, though I admittedly can't directly prove that.
