The story of Prop 8 is the story of a group of citizens losing their basic human rights |
|
It's not a narrative about anything else.
People who TRY to make it about other things, people who try to deflect attention from the real life, legal ramifications of Prop 8, and the families affected, are not allies nor friends of the LGBT community.

And the straight people who say "Just wait." do not think too deeply about this subject. My oldest friend is a lesbian who served as a WAVE in WW2. She's in her 80s.

And it's even more disgraceful that this injustice is happening in California.

6. Washington State is next. We have a "everything up to marriage" law, and the |
|
fundies and their homophobic bigot allies are doing everything they can to get the law repealed. Now the sponsors are suing to be able to hide the identities of those persons who support and contribute to the "kick the queers" initiative. That's right, they think that anyone's identity that contributes to a pro-gay cause should be public and available. However, if you are anti-gay, you should have the right to keep your identity and your contributions secret. And the horribly sad part about all of this, is that they have lots of support.

I may not be gay, but I recognize discrimination when I see it. Prop 8 was horrible. I went to my local protest against it back on Nov 15th of last year. I hope it's overturned - and the sooner the better.

10. The Long and Short of This Is That Marriage Equality |
|
Edited on Fri Aug-14-09 04:24 AM by RetiredTrotskyite
will, sooner or later, have to come via the Supreme Court. The fundies are fanatics about this and will not stop. I hate that someone's religious convictions can take my civil rights away. No one should ever get to vote on anyone's civil rights. I really don't care what people believe unless someone is harmed or they obstruct the rights of others.
What I don't understand is all this right-wing insanity over people wanting to marry and commit to each other. Canada has had marriage equality for four years now and the sky has not fallen. Sure, there are Canadians who don't really like the idea but they've come to accept it as more or less a fait accompli. We went to get our license and were treated like any couple coming to get a marriage license. We showed our birth certificates and state IDs and in about 20 minutes, we had our license. This country is so insane with all the fundies agititating over something which is, or at least SHOULD be our birthright--the right to life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness.
Now that these idiots are agitating against our civil rights, they feel that they should have anonymity if they donate to anti-gay campaigns. Why? If they are so gung-ho on this, you would think they would be proud to stand up and be counted in favour of "traditional marriage". This shows their hypocrisy. They feel they should have the right to essentially donate to movements which have the real potential to ruin the lives of LGBT families, but that there should be no consequences. If a merchant or restauranteur is using money I have paid to try to make my life harder and abrogate my freedoms and that of other LGBT couples and families, you're damned straight I want to know! That way I don't have to further subsidise their efforts. They can do as they wish with their money, but I want to know where they stand so that I am not helping them to attempt to limit my rights.
As for straights who say, "wait", I ask "why?" I am tired of waiting for this country to get into the 21st century and to acknowledge my marriage. I'd like to see how patient they would be were they in my shoes and that of my spouse. It's easy to say "wait" when all the priviledge is theirs.

12. Well, now it also appears to be the story of yet another stolen election. |
|
So now that's TWO civil rights stolen by the same action.
Smash the electro-fraud machines, and NEVER put anybody's civil rights up to a popular vote again. Imagine if the Southern states had done that around 1964.

in the front of the bus.
We need to claim our marriage rights in the tens or hundreds of thousands and go to jail. We need to refuse to pay the penalties, we need to fill out our tax forms and insurance forms and claim our rights rather than ask for our rights, and we need to file against the state in every case, creating a backlog of cases.
I am reminded of a story where some town made it illegal to be gay 20 or 30 years ago and a bunch of people voluntarily turned themselves in and asked to be arrested and prosecuted.
I'm sorry I don't remember the particulars but any of our elders here might.
