A mildly funny tale from home about Rehoboth Beach
Home is Huntington Beach, California. My sister writes:

At Albertsons the other day, the young lady checker, with a funny smile on her face, asked Eric* why he was wearing a Rehoboth Beach t-shirt. I said, hoping Eric wouldn't hear me, "Because my sister's a lesbian." She said, "What?" Then I said, "My sister went there on vacation." She said, still smiling, "Did she have a good time?" I said, "Yes, she absolutely loved it." We said it all without words.

Unfortunately, Eric did hear me, and asked if Rehoboth Beach is a gay resort type of place. I told him I think so, but that maybe it's like San Francisco, lots of gays AND straights. Now he's embarrassed and says he can't wear that t-shirt anymore. He was a little upset that I never told him, but he was laughing.

*Eric: my brother in law, married to the storyteller

3. Rehobeth is a family beach
At the very southern end of the beach is the gay section. The hype does not live up to the reputation, and it is about as close to San Francisco as the rest of Delaware.

5. It's the only place I've been so far (5 yrs) on the east coast I have
felt totally safe being fully myself in public. It's not about how much of the place is "gay;" it's about how safe we feel. That's what matters to me anyway.

6. I agree
and I firmly believe that the "gayer" a place is, the safer we are

7. Mildly funny with a sad ending
I assume Eric was embarrassed because there exists the potential for folks to assume he might be gay b/c of wearing a "Rehobeth Beach" teeshirt, and this is why he "says he can't wear that t-shirt anymore."

Too bad.
