Anti-Gay Santorum Faces Challenge Within GOP
http://www.365gay.com/newscon05/08/081805santorum.htm

A pro-gay Philadelphia real-estate broker says he plans to challenge U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) in the 2006 Republican primary.

Santorum has been one of the most outspoken supporters of a federal amendment to ban same-sex marriage. In June a coalition of LGBT rights groups announced the formation of a new organization designed to defeat Santorum. (story)

It also emerged this summer that Robert Traynham, the senator's the chief of staff and communications director, is gay. (story)

1. Good. Split his base, and get a great Dem to beat them both.

2. There is something not right with that guy. Maybe he is in the closet
also, (I am speaking of Santorum. His openly gay chief of staff says this:

"When asked by Rogers how a gay man could speak for someone with Santorum's record of homophobia, Traynham said "Senator Santorum is a man of principle, he is a man who sticks up for what he believes in, I strongly do support Senator Santorum."

It has to be a facade. Would a black person chose to work for a member of the KKK?

Well I am very glad a normal person is running against Sanatorum. Now let's just hope that enough normal people vote.

4. As a Pennsylvania citizen, I want him out as soon as...
possible. In my opinion, Santorum's too dangerous to strategize the best way to get the seat to go Democratic. (I understand your point though, and I think that Casey will be able to beat a relatively unknown person if he were to beat Santorum in the primary.)

5. a moderate Republican without Santorum's baggage would be hard to beat
even if he was unknown

and I'm afraid that it would push Casey to run to the right

6. I understand your point.
There's no winning here. The only thing going for us is Casey's name recognition, since his father was governor.

8. I agree. I was very disappointed when the "Powers That Be"...
chose Casey. I really disliked his father who really made the women of Pennsylvania suffer all kinds of indignities to exercise their right to choose. My fear is that we're going with someone who we think is better, but he may end up being bad also. (However, he can't be as bad as Santorum.) I hope that I'm surprised and that he turns out to be really good. At least, if Casey won, we'd have another Democratic senator to help us take back the Senate.

10. The problem is that once he loses in the Senate, he's just going...
to pop up somewehere else the same way that John Ashcroft did.

I certainly don't wish John Ashcroft on the citizens of Missouri, but I wonder whether our country might be better off today if he had won the Senate seat rather than having been appointed Attorney General.

At least if Santorum loses his Senate seat, he'll have less opportunity to preach his bile to us. (And hopefully he'll lose to a Democrat and we'll be one seat closer to controlling the Senate again.)
